I am Dehing Patkai. I am the Amazon of the East. Today is my Day. World Biodiversity Day.

But I am not happy. Do you know why?

Let me tell you…

I am India’s biggest rainforest, spread across an area of more than five hundred square kilometers. I am also one of India’s last lowland evergreen rainforests (last, yeah, you read that right).

With over 300 avian species, 40 reptile species, 60 types of trees, 100 species of orchids, and several varieties of fauna, butterflies, migratory birds, big cats, and hoolock gibbons, I am the symbol of biodiversity.

Most of my residents are rare and unique in the world, and I am sure many of you have never even heard of them (that’s why not telling you the long list of names).

I have a dedicated place for the majestic Asiatic Elephants (read Elephant Reserve) and, I offer part of my forest land for the India-Myanmar trans-border elephant corridor (I am guessing you already know that right? Still no?)

My riches and bounties don’t end here. Fortunately, or rather, unfortunately, I have a great reserve of coal (now, that rings a bell in some of your minds).

Coming back to why I am unhappy, I still won’t tell you. Instead, I am giving you a riddle to solve.

What weighs heavier...biodiversity or coal?

By the way, Happy World Biodiversity Day. This year’s theme is “Our solutions are in nature.”

But the solution to my problem lies in your answer. Don’t fail me.

Well.. I am not sure the total profit estimated from this but, I am told that Assam flood last year had an estimated loss of way more than 250 croroes plus the aids that come every year. #climatechange is happening too fast and we dont even need experts to tell us that all these cyclones and untimely flash floods and cloud bursts with drastic drought on some other parts are happening just for fun - so people can have rainy days and lock-downs and sit at home to watch some more netflix and watch film artists sweeping their floors on face book. Lovely post Roseleen and you chose absolutely the right day to do this! We are so busy watching Calcutta's gorgeous JW Mariott's breakage in cyclone that some coal mining permission to Coal India to mine in Dehing Patkai story surreptitiously made its way avoiding all attention of the readers and activists! Isnt it so sad that India is so naturally wealthy and we have no regard what so ever for what we have in abundance! Parts of Europe has consciously stopped coal just a month back and we would not stop digging! You are so right coal is definitely heavier! it would sit so heavy on the region's health and India's soul indefinitely if this is done! Interestingly, we are not doing much to rescue energy and money from all the wastes the sub-surface is creating indiscriminately including so much water is getting wasted and we are doing new energy production and worse even #mining. #WhyOnEarth we have the cyclones by different names destroying coastal WestBengal Orissa Bangladesh so frequently! Visit Calcutta and near by and you would find that all the ponds, and water bodies are covered up and sealed to build all those multistories. So, not only you dug up where the earth isnt interested, you seal up where earth had created its own little breathing space - demolishing complete land / wet-land / water balance of a geology! And what more who is doing all these accounting - the total value of loss plus total amount of aids that goes after every such devastating disaster! Leave alone #carbonneutrality, very soon we would be left boasting of our past which India is so happy to do all the time and show case the ruins of Himalays, the rainforests, the skeletons of all those endangered spicies that would actually go extint and probably be left with concretes ...
