I am NOT afraid to ask for help.

I am NOT afraid to ask for help.

Not too long ago I was offered the chance to start my own internet television broadcast network. When I was pitched the idea, I thought 'Gee, how hard could it really be?' So I jumped into it with both feet. I began reading any and all articles and books about running a television channel, running businesses and staying up with the millennials.

Then came the questions. Where do I broadcast? What do I broadcast? How do I get content? How do I get viewers? How could I justify (and eventually recoup) the costs?

After reaching out (cold calling and cold emailing) to many industry insiders, I have made many wonderful new contacts. Some of their offers, although very generously cut because they knew my budget, were still cost prohibitive for me at this stage. Then the subject of public domain was suggested to me. So that's where I began.

After having a long heart-to-heart conversation with my wife I brainstormed a name that reflected my vision of the channels and created my website. I envisioned my channels being a universally broadcasted Internet Television network. Hence the name: TransGlobalTV. So I parked it at www.TransGlobalTV.com . Next I began my arduous search for public domain films and shows.

I now have a library of thousands of hours of Public Domain movies. After arranging them in a semi-intelligent fashion and creating the channels, I sat down with my wife and the four children that are still at home, to present to them my grand project. It was a proud moment for me. It took all of about five minutes for the yawns, antsiness and boredom to set in with them.

Heading back to the proverbial drawing board, I began contacting filmmakers, webisode creators, animators, producers, unsigned bands with music videos and basically anyone with broadcast worthy content. I began almost begging them to allow me to broadcast their content.

One person, who asked not to be given credit, suggested adding commercials to some channels, running exclusive channels and offering revenue sharing opportunities with the content owners. So that is what I have done. Thank you, Anonymous Advisor!

I convinced my wife to handle the social media side of things. Since she was already on Twitter and Facebook all the time, this seems a logical move. She immediately created www.facebook.com/TransGlobalTV and @TranGloTV on Twitter. She also posts daily and keeps everyone updated on what I am doing with the website and the channels. Thanks Amy!

I knew I would never be able to broadcast how I wanted without revenue coming in so I spoke to my mother, the saleswoman. She was a retired Realtor and had experience selling millions of dollars worth of Real Estate. She is now my sales consultant. What was her initial comment? "Son, I can't sell commercial airtime for a channel without viewers". So I began focusing on bringing in viewers. Back to cold calls, heavily depending on my wife, and lots of time posting to internet boards, commenting on articles and spreading the word, by mouth. Now she is actively selling my commercial airtime, without an issue. Thanks Mom!
