I am Addicted
Why aren’t you facing your addiction??
I have coached many people and I still haven’t come across anyone who isn’t addicted to something.?
Contrary to what you may believe, addiction isn’t just about abusing substances. We can be addicted to stress, anxiety, misery, emotional eating, etc. I hadn’t sat down and thought about this until two years ago when I realized that even though I’d resisted addiction throughout my entire life, I was an addict.?
Years of dealing with my fathers alcohol addiction, high-school bullies, going to college, which I hated, then dropping out of college and needing to deal with what I was going to do for the rest of my life, then working 110 hour weeks, all lead up to my lightbulb moment at 6am one morning.?
I had an overwhelming sense of anxiety, and all I wanted to do was get to work and work my ass off. That’s when I became aware that I was addicted to stress. Stress is what fuelled me to work harder. I didn’t know life without it. So I took about three days off to meditate, journal and figure this out.?
When your body and mind receive the same thing every day, it becomes reliant on it. In my case it was cortisol and adrenaline. I became addicted to those chemicals, so I would do things to get my daily hit.??
My question to you is, what are you addicted to? Perhaps you’re not even aware that you’re addicted to something. I wasn’t, but if you dig a little deeper, I’m certain that something will show up, and when you figure that out, I’ve gotta warn you, it’s not something that you’ll be able to change overnight. Years of relying on stress means that I’ll most likely be working to release it for years to come. But the point is not to get rid of it entirely, it’s to wake up, see it for what it is, and begin working on it so that you can become the most optimal version of yourself.?
