When I look back on my journey, there’s one common thread in every role that shaped me: I always worked for a boss who pushed me. Not just encouraged me, but challenged me. They demanded more, expected better, and wouldn’t settle for mediocrity.

At the time, it wasn’t always easy. There were moments of frustration, exhaustion, and even doubt. But now I realise: those were the moments that made me.

Why Being Pushed Matters

Here’s the truth: growth doesn’t come from comfort. The best bosses — the ones who truly care about your development — are the ones who push you beyond what you think you’re capable of.

Why do they push?

1. To Expand Your Limits: They see potential in you that you might not yet see in yourself.
2. To Build Resilience: By pushing you through challenges, they prepare you for the storms ahead.
3. To Drive Excellence: Mediocrity doesn’t create success. Excellence does, and that takes effort, focus, and accountability.

The Bosses Who Shaped Me

I’ve worked for some incredible leaders in my career. Each of them had their own style, but they all shared one thing in common: they didn’t let me settle.

• The Boss Who Challenged My Ideas: Instead of agreeing with me, they made me defend my ideas, forcing me to think critically and refine my strategies.
• The Boss Who Pushed Me to Lead: When I doubted myself, they gave me responsibility I wasn’t sure I was ready for. I had to step up, and I did.
• The Boss Who Held Me Accountable: They wouldn’t let me cut corners or make excuses. They demanded results, and that demand taught me discipline.
