In my twenties, I responded to an ad from the CIA to become a spy.
I was super excited when I got the interview.
I met a man in a soundproof hotel room. We talked for hours. He knew my entire history from kindergarten onwards.
I was shocked.
He asked probing questions about how I would handle potential situations.?
Some life threatening.?
One of the most important lines of inquiry focused on the issue of ego.?What if I saved the world and couldn’t tell anyone about it?
During our time together I noticed that there was a pair of women’s shoes by the closet. Yet, he told me he was here alone.
In that moment I knew I couldn’t be a spy.?
Why?
I would need to be a liar. To deceive. To trick. Perhaps even to kill.
What I did realize was that my motivation to apply for this job was that human behavior fascinated me.?
I have studied people all my life and am able to read them instantly.?
To see their essential goodness.
Also their weaknesses.
More formally, I’ve deconstructed thousands of TV, radio, podcasts, panels and presentations for facial, body and language studying the macro and micro-movements that show who we are.?
It’s the basis of all my media training.?
That and the thousands of interviews and role-plays from customer service to C-suite I did in almost 10 years of corporate work.?
Plus the thousands of course participants and clients I’ve media trained.

But back to the CIA story...?
At the end of our time together he cautioned me never to speak about our conversation.?
I’ve never been one who liked being told what to do or play by the rules.
If you’re a rule breaker, an innovator or a person who wants to share your big idea or great product or book with the world without deception or ego in the spirit of generosity—let’s talk.?
