Hyundai Steel Showcases Carbon-Reducing Automotive Steel Technology

Hyundai Steel participated in major global automotive body conferences held in Germany and the United States, showcasing its carbon-reducing automotive steel technology utilizing an electric arc furnace-blast furnace hybrid process. This technology combines molten iron produced from a blast furnace and scrap-based molten iron from an electric arc furnace, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 20% compared to conventional blast furnace products. Hyundai Steel exhibited products made with this technology, such as 1.0GPa hot-rolled steel, 1.2GPa cold-rolled steel, and 1.5GPa hot stamping steel, attracting the attention of global automotive companies.

This technology has been used to develop and test a variety of automotive steel products, including high-formability exterior steel, ultra-high-strength steel, interior steel, and hot stamping products, all while maintaining the same quality as conventional blast furnace products and successfully reducing carbon emissions. Hyundai Steel plans to expand sales of automotive products globally and support the transition to carbon neutrality through this technology.

At this conference, Hyundai Steel aimed to promote its carbon-reducing steel technology, strengthen its competitive edge, and enhance cooperation with global automakers and parts manufacturers.
