Hyrox - the new fitness competition format !
For more than 2 years, I have been involved in my research and lecturing in analyzing new offerings in the sports world that address the societal and technological changes around us. The change of sports - existing sports with new formats like Beach-Handball or Beach-Tennis - or completely new sports and/or sports events. Like Hyrox.
In the summer of 2019, I heard a podcast - rather by chance - about Hyrox, a new fitness event. The interview partner in the podcast is Germany's most internationally successful hockey player Moritz Fürste, who explains his idea for the event.
Always on the lookout for new and innovative ideas in the sports world, I have since shared these ideas and visions with my german and international students in many sports & event management seminars.
As an active athlete and former coach, the concept naturally appealed to me as well. The somewhat boring running sessions and the - more or less - same sessions and environment in the gym. So what about a fitness competition beyond a 10k run or a marathon? Here come the Hyrox-Event Concept of a combination of eight workouts with eight times 1-kilometer running into play, which appealed to me from a sporting point of view, from the very beginning.
So in January 2020, I decided: Training for my first Hyrox event in April 2020 in Berlin. What happened worldwide in the meantime was obvious to everyone and I was pleased that the Hyrox organizer Upsolut Sports finally announced the date for the resumption of the competition series in summer 2021.
Training starts conscientiously for the Hyrox in Leipzig and off I went. It was a great event and with 1:35hrs I am not completely satisfied with my time (sub 1:30h was the goal...) but it was a very well organized and motivating event, with music, moderation, and always helpful staff on site.

Although international professional athletes started in the last group, the event is really a sporting competition for everyone of all ages and performance levels. It is the variety of exercises, that makes the training and the competition so interesting and variedly, the potential danger of injuries is low as you mainly train your strength endurance and aerobic capacity.
In the end, I was happy finishing my first Hyrox in about 1hr 35min and becoming fourth in my age group. Although I did not reach my goal of a sub 1hr 35min, I was happy to have completed my first HYROX and I got hooked: The next competition will be in November 2021 in Berlin. If I have registered? Sure ! My goal? Sub 1hr 35min!
