The Hypha Wire: Recap | 4/19/24 Edition

Happy Taylor Swift album release day!

I’m exercising immense restraint and not devoting this entire opening to the marketing prowess of Taylor’s team.?

Instead, let’s discuss something equally divisive: LinkedIn. I’ve previously shared tips and tricks for LinkedIn posts in the newsletter, but today I want to talk about types of LinkedIn content.

On a call with my team this morning, we discussed opportunities to experiment with different content strategies on the platform. If you frequent LinkedIn, you’ll know that the content is wide ranging. From copypasta workplace stories to toxic hustle culture rhetoric, it can be hard to parse the good from the bad.?

If you’re able to sort through the noise, what types of posts really resonate with you? What makes you comment or share?

My personal ethos is that LinkedIn content shouldn’t stray all that much from the inbound content methodology. Per HubSpot, under this philosophy, you can “create valuable, informative, and engaging content that pulls people in and cultivates a genuine connection with your brand.”

Why should LinkedIn be any different? I’m not suggesting eradicating self-promotional posts forever. Hyping yourself up and focusing on marketing your skills is absolutely important. But that’s not what keeps people coming back for more.

Here are a few content ideas that, in my opinion (and maybe expertise ??), will yield positive connections, improve your engagement, and help LinkedIn stay, well, helpful.

  • Product updates. This style can be used by software novices and experts alike, as well as by individuals who work at SaaS companies. Share a cool update or a feature roundup, and let your readers know how that will improve their workflow.
  • Walkthroughs. Whether in a handy guide or through a screen recording, take your followers through a step-by-step guide of... something. It could be extremely niche or just a top-level view, but make it a learning opportunity.
  • Blogs. This one is simple, and a staple on LinkedIn, but I would add a caveat. Don’t sell the blog short by only posting the link and the meta description. Write about what the reader will learn, or give them some context surrounding the piece.

Those only scratch the surface of the posts you can experiment with on LinkedIn. Fluidity and creativity are key to this process as well, so take liberties and try new things. Most importantly though, be authentic, and provide value.

D’oh’nt Sleep On Certification Week

By Steve Mosco , Managing Inbound Content Developer, Hypha HubSpot Development

Try not to be shocked, but a man in his mid-40s is about to reference a scene from the golden age of The Simpsons.

The scene has since been modernized into meme format, and basically, we have Homer looking smart in his reading glasses. He’s deep in thought reading a book titled Advanced Marketing. In the next panel of the meme, that book is in the trash and we cut Homer now reading Beginning Marketing. In the trash goes that book, and Homer is now reading a dictionary and we cut to him looking up the word “marketing.”?

That about sums up my early days knee-deep in digital marketing at Hypha. Coming from a journalism background, I can conduct research and interviews, and string together a few sentences about whatever I’m assigned to (assuming there’s a deadline to keep me motivated). But when I arrived at Hypha, it didn’t take long to recognize the hard truth: I had a lot to learn. A CRM? That could literally stand for anything. A sales funnel? Friend, the only funnel I knew about was the one filled with beer in college.

A hearty “thank you” to my boss for hiring me—as well as a most mournful apology if I misrepresented myself in my job interview. Anyways, we just exited World Certification Week, and let me tell you, without those expertly guided walkthroughs in the HubSpot Academy , I’d still be fighting for my life at a community newspaper. From inbound methodologies to content strategy, and SEO to CRM management, I can safely say that I have a practical understanding of the “why” and the “how” behind each campaign and every customer interaction.

What’s Certification Week? Well, it’s HubSpot Academy’s annual event encouraging knowledge expansion, connection, and growth by dedicating time to their professional development. I encourage everyone, from partners and software users to curious students, to keep an eye out for HubSpot’s Certification Week next year. It’s an opportunity to expand your digital lexicon and become a pro, by learning from the pros.

Whether you’re deciphering the basics of a sales funnel or strategizing a complex multi-channel campaign, there’s a cert for it. And since those video tutorials never go away, I can always dip back in for a refresher, no matter how much of a Homer day I’m having.

Second Hand News ??

Business Insider : It’s not just you: Reddit is taking over Google by Hugh Langley ?

SEOs have reported a sizable uptick in Reddit, Inc. content appearing on the Search Engine Results Page (SERPs). There are a few schools of thought on this, some feeling that the content will only proliferate and others feeling Google will rein it in eventually. My takeaway would be to capitalize on the traffic while you can. Why not make a Reddit account for your brand, posting helpful (see: not spammy or salesy) content on appropriate threads?

?“‘Personally, I would expect this current dominance by Reddit to calm down once Google notes that the search experience has not been improved by the increased inclusion of Reddit,’ SEO consultant Natalie Slater told BI.”

Moz : How to Appear in Position One in 2024?by Tom Capper ?

Staying on the topic of SERPs, this Whiteboard Friday feature from SEO company, Moz, comes with some good news as well as a few caveats. It is still possible for your content to rank in position one (the first result on the page after ads) despite what many SEOs fear. However, we are seeing the continued growth of Google-generated features such as Knowledge Graphs that can lead to your content being pushed further down. I will note that we are still of the belief that the best way to achieve a high SERP placement is informative, quality content. Follow that advice and you’ll be playing less tag with search results.

“What’s more positive again, though, is that this is broadly steady year-on-year. In the last year, we haven’t seen a big collapse of organic, like a lot of people tend to think and tend to fear.”

What is web accessibility?

How accessible is your website?

This is a question many companies do not think to ask, until it’s too late. Businesses are required by law to provide fair and equal access to their services for all?persons, including those with disabilities. Unless accessibility is explicitly addressed in design, development and ongoing maintenance, a website is likely inaccessible to a segment of the population.

Heard on Slack

Phillip Chester : As an introduction to the artist I have for you today I’m gonna share a lyric from an earlier song of his: “If we don’t bleed, it don’t feel like a song.”

That line has always resonated with me in terms of describing the music of John Moreland, a singer/songwriter known for soul-punching lyrics and an incredible gravelly voice. That line illustrates the emotional and physical effort that John puts into his songs. He is known for playing nearly every instrument on his albums along with oftentimes handling production. His latest album Visitor is a continuation of these traditions and a great addition to his catalog that has made him known as a songwriter’s songwriter.

I am to John Moreland what the BeyHive is to Beyonce so unsurprisingly there are no skips on this album for me.?
