The Hypha Wire: Recap | 2/23/24 Edition

Hi there! Happy Friday.

This week I’ve been thinking about a friend who’s about to start a new job. This friend also happens to be a longtime coworker, so there are professional implications alongside personal ones.

On the professional side, it’s never easy to lose a team member you love. At Hypha, we always say that a company’s culture changes when someone leaves and when someone joins.?

Part of maintaining that culture is making sure an employee’s offboarding is as smooth as their onboarding. We try our hardest to avoid a new employee hitting that “I’m just sitting here” part of the day, and we also try to avoid someone feeling overwhelmed and overworked right before they leave for a new organization or life adventure.

I would encourage other companies to invest time into creating both an on and offboarding document. Let’s review some of our offboarding protocols, as we follow our departing coworker on their journey.

Our template covers such topics as:

  • Confirming their last day
  • Notifying clients and transitioning work
  • Removing them from shared workspaces like Slack and HubSpot
  • Reviewing health insurance and 401k details
  • Scheduling an exit interview (and more)

So my tip is to think about their journey holistically. What are the things we need to accomplish on the work level, on the personal level, and the tactical level? Covering those bases ensures a smooth transition, and hopefully, you have a now-former-employee-turned-company-evangelist out representing you in the world.

Personal Growth v. Professional Advancement

By Jake Stringfellow , Senior Designer, Hypha HubSpot Development

Question, is it possible to focus and daydream at the same time? Let that linger for a second. While daydreaming is not a problem for me, yesterday my mind wandered off as I began dreaming up envisioning my perfect work-from-home setup—a sleek standing desk, and ergonomic furniture, all nestled in the heart of a lush jungle. I think the jungle element might be the point of separation for most, but over the past few years, plants have become almost an obsession for me.??

Introducing plants to my office space got me thinking (not daydreaming) about the nuances of growth, beyond botany, and into the world of design and business. Botanical growth presents itself in various ways—sometimes visible, like a new leaf or vibrant colors, while at other times, plants can appear stalled or dormant. This observation underlines the supreme rule of the botany world: grow or die. And when development isn’t apparent above the surface, you need to search for the equally crucial, secret growth occurring below the soil.

When pondering growth in the professional realm, two names come to mind—HubSpot and Hypha. I’ve been with Hypha for eight-plus years, all within the HubSpot ecosystem. I’ve seen HubSpot pivot and grow into the full-service marketing juggernaut that it is today, but more importantly, I’ve seen the same evolution at Hypha. It’s not easy to stay the course in a storm of new tech, AI, and pandemics, yet Hypha has grown, above and below the surface, to be a dependable, well-rooted team. I think it’s fair to say that seeing a company’s past growth will show you how bright its future can be.

Wrapping this up, while professional growth remains pivotal for success, perhaps the biggest takeaway is on the personal side. Personal growth is the foundation for professional advancement. So consider this first step: Where can you grow as a person? Sometimes, it’s the unnoticed growth that paves the way for real success.

MarTech : How to survive (and learn from) email marketing mistakes by Ryan Phelan ?

This is a nice piece that teaches how to have grace when you make a mistake, but how to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Suggested tactics include slowing down, double checking, and owning up to mistakes when they occur.?

“Mistakes happen, not because digital marketers are careless or incompetent but because we’re all moving fast. We’re trying to get one campaign out the door while planning for the next. But we need to stop and think.”

Search Engine Land : Who won: Measuring the most effective Super Bowl 2024 Ads by Greg Jarboe ?

Here’s a bit of a follow-up to a previous newsletter where I wondered aloud which Super Bowl commercial tactic would prove to be the most effective. This dives into several ways they’ve parsed the commercials’ successes depending on polls, AI, and a content tracking system. To me, the clear winners across the board were campaigns that featured celebs.?

“This year’s big game was played in between 59 ads. If you used a brand lift survey to measure metrics such as ad recall, brand awareness, and consideration, then you’d find that only a fraction of the Super Bowl 2024 ads would be considered effective.

“That’s why showing up is necessary but insufficient to ‘winning.’”

Maximizing ROI With HubSpot: The Value of Custom Integrations

If you’re looking to get the most value out of the HubSpot CRM and maximize return on investment (ROI), custom integrations are one of the most effective ways to get there.

In practice, this means data and other critical information are consolidated and more easily accessible. While those integrations are indispensable for your organization, the custom variety, such as grabbing data from external platforms or linking a non-native e-commerce platform to HubSpot, can drive even greater efficiencies and open up new opportunities for your business.?

To fully realize the benefits of HubSpot’s integration capacities, you’ll have to identify specific solutions and create realistic goals and objectives by examining current workflows and pain points.?

Phil Stott : Really interesting conversation about the future of the content industry between the hosts of Hard Fork and the CEO of Perplexity . It’s amazing how much this feels like the birth of the internet all over again: people building products that can’t work without scraping content that news orgs and businesses have paid to produce, but giving no thought to what happens when their solution crushes traffic/revenue opportunity for the producers.
