The Hypha Wire | 5/17/24 Edition

Howdy, everyone! I hope you’re feeling well on this fine Friday.

We’re more than halfway through May already, somehow. This means that summer is?right around the corner, officially.

We all know that feeling—the sun starts shining, moods lighten, ice coffee comes back to the forefront (or maybe it never left if you’re like me and refuse to switch to hot in the winter).?

As such, there are legitimate correlations between “nice” weather and mental health that we should not ignore in the workplace; and giving employees access to a few more hours of sun is a healthy way to parlay the sunshine benefits into the office. Enter: Summer Fridays.

If you’re not familiar, Summer Fridays are typically half days (though in some cases full) implemented from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Employees can sign off at their leisure when they reach a good stopping point, and can get a jump on their weekend.

According to ADP, “66% of those who have summer schedules say it increases their productivity,” and PwC reported that from its summer hours pilot program, 73% of employees said “it positively impacted their general wellbeing to a great extent.” (On a related note, there’s been promising data reported about four-day workweek pilot programs, suggesting that workers are happier overall, which also benefits employers.)

Now look, those are just a few stats—of many positive across the internet (I was hard-pressed to find any negative stats though, frankly)—but they’re still just numbers on a screen. So let me tell you my personal experience with Summer Fridays.

Obviously, I do not speak for the world at large, but I can speak for the experience at our company. Summer Fridays at Hypha are a win. Morale increases and in turn productivity and overall satisfaction do as well. And I cannot stress enough how beneficial those results are in the workplace.

Clearly, I’m a cheerleader of the concept. If you’re still skeptical of the idea, humor me and try a pilot program. Do a few Summer Fridays, and then survey your employees. And don’t forget to let me know the (positive ??) results.

Important Update: Changes to HubSpot’s Navigation

By Phil Stott , Head of Client Success, Hypha HubSpot Development

Have you logged into HubSpot in the last 24 hours and found an unfamiliar navigation??

It’s not you: they updated it!?

Having been opted into the beta for a while, I can testify that it is indeed a little weird looking for the links you need being on the left side, having been accustomed to the classic nav style.

To help our clients familiarize themselves with the update, we put together the following quick primer on where to find the important stuff—and I figured it was useful enough to share here as well.

Top Navigation Bar: Prior to the change, everything within your HubSpot instance was available through the top navigation bar. With the new layout, only the following items can now be found there:

  • Sprocket icon: Otherwise known as the orange HubSpot logo, this icon lives in the top left and will lead you to your default home page.
  • Search: The global search bar can be used to search your entire HubSpot account efficiently—from looking up contacts to blog posts.
  • Calling: The phone icon accesses the calling tool directly from the top navigation.
  • Marketplace: Clicking the storefront icon opens the HubSpot marketplaces, including the App Marketplace, Template Marketplace, and Solutions Directory.
  • Help: Easily access HubSpot support resources via the help icon.
  • Settings: The gear icon accesses all your account and product settings in one location.
  • Notifications: Stay updated with user notifications in a central location.
  • Account: Located all the way in the top right, clicking your account name opens a dropdown menu with a variety of account options and services.

Navigation Sidebar Menu: The addition of a collapsible left sidebar menu is the biggest change in the redesign—and it comes with a bit of a rethink in terms of how tools and resources are organized. Here’s a quick overview of what lives where:

  • Workspaces: Tools for organizing specific daily tasks, including prospecting and help desk.
  • CRM: Open this menu for links to your contacts, companies, deals and tickets. This section is also a quick way to get to lists, your HubSpot inbox, calls, tasks, and the all-new time-tracking tool.
  • Marketing: Tools for marketing content, conversions, and strategy, including email, forms, CTAs, and more.
  • Content: Tools for web-hosted content management—think blogs, site and landing pages, knowledge base, and more.
  • Commerce: Tools related to commerce functionalities such as payments, invoices and subscriptions.
  • Automations: Workflows, sequences, chatflows and surveys can all be found in this menu.
  • Reporting & Data: Primarily for dashboards and reports. However, integrations and your organization’s specific data model can also be found here.
  • Library: Access your templates, files, and other resources.

These changes apply to all subscriptions and are intended to group items in a simpler way to enhance your navigation experience within HubSpot.

TechCrunch : OpenAI inks deal to train AI on Reddit data by Kyle Wiggers ?

After Reddit’s deal with Google to let the search giant train its AI models on their content, it was only a matter of time until OpenAI got into the game as well. The deal naturally caused Reddit’s stock to surge, and it’s leaving me wondering how far their star will rise in the coming months.

“In a?blog post on OpenAI’s press relations site, the company said that the Reddit partnership will provide it access to ‘real-time, structured and unique content’ — e.g. posts and replies — from Reddit, allowing its tools and models to ‘better understand and showcase’ that content. Reddit content will be incorporated into ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular conversational AI, and the companies will work together to bring unspecified new ‘AI-powered features’ to both Reddit users and moderators.”

TIME : A Group of TikTok Creators Are Suing the U.S. to Block a Potential Ban on the App by Sabrina Willmer ?

The TikTok saga continues to unwind (that’s a clock joke). This suit follows one filed by TikTok itself, which argues that the ban is unconstitutional. The deadline for parent company ByteDance to sell is approaching quickly—of which they have no plans to heed—so we’re certainly in for an interesting few months. With that, here’s a statement from Ambika Kumar , a lawyer for the platform’s creators:

“Our clients rely on TikTok to express themselves, learn and find community. They hope to vindicate not only their First Amendment rights, but the rights of the other approximately 170 million Americans who also use TikTok. The ban is a pernicious attack on free speech that is contrary to the nation’s founding principles.”

Creating Family Relationships With Custom Objects

For businesses that interact with people who aren’t tracked as customers, managing data can be a real headache. This often includes organizations that provide services for young people一schools, camps, recreational programs, and youth activities.

In these situations, the child is the primary recipient of the service, but most administrative tasks like enrollment, scheduling, and payment processing involve interactions with an adult family member or guardian.

As such, it’s the adult who’s logged as the customer (as a contact record), in your typical off-the-shelf CRM setup,?including?in HubSpot. There may even be two contact records for adults sharing administrative responsibilities, one for billing and the other for the child’s primary care.

In a CRM, a contact record is a centralized source organizing relevant customer data, interactions, marketing efforts, and sales strategies—elements that are essential for effective operations and targeted marketing.

But in our child-centered use cases, if the customer data you need, like a kid’s age or academic level, isn’t part of the contact record, chances are it’s scattered elsewhere across the CRM. Accessing and leveraging that data can be cumbersome for staff and problematic for the business. Things can easily fall through the cracks.

This was precisely the challenge faced by our client, a California-based soccer training center with 1,600 active members aged one year to adult.?
