The Hypermap, where everything has a place

In 2016, After Belonging examined the new objects, spaces, and territories that transformed our condition of belonging. — where do we belong? How do we manage our belongings? Questions that in this global isolation crisis are more important than ever.
Estudio Brava contributed to the Tríenle with a Hypermap. Here, Oslo was the center of the World. Around it appeared all the places and the institutions where the Triennial took place. A complex document that draws a global interconnected panorama.
The Hypermap uses two types of documents as a reference: the first one would be the non-occidental historical Mapa Mundi. It was clear to us that the hyper-drawing should be a map; and that this map should show the places where the Triennale happens. But this map could not be a canonic Mapa Mundi, not even a sophisticated one as Fuller’s Dymaxion.
This is a map where the center is Oslo and surrounds it appear the other places that are part of the Triennial. In these maps, there isn’t also a real scale relation. There is a political relation that redimensions these places in a similar way that happens in touristic city maps, where the architectural icons are enlarged in order to understand easily different hierarchies.
The second reference document would be the “Where is Waldo” type of diagram. We are fascinated about the ability to generate a scenario full of information with a complex multi-scale: a complex document that draws a complex panorama interconnected.
The interactivity of the Hypermap allows for multiple readings and outputs.
The cartography is understood as a highlighting board for After Belonging elements. The Hypermap has been used as a visual guide in different talks and conferences around the world.
The cartography was published in the exhibition catalog and is a graphic representation of the legacy of the biennial.
The publication examines both our attachment to places and collectivities as well as our relation to the objects we produce, own, share, and exchange. It analyzes the architectures entangled in these definitions through a selection of projects, texts, and case studies. This publication is the result of the work and research leading up to Oslo Architecture Triennale 2016.
In Estudio Brava we promote the work of Cultural Institutions to perpetuate their impact and effect on the progress of the society, aligning their discourse with powerful communication tools.
