The roar of engines in Formula 1 is about to change. The Japanese Grand Prix, which takes place this Sunday at 07:00 CET at the Suzuka circuit, could be one of the last where adrenaline runs to the beat of fossil fuels.
Behind the scenes, a silent revolution is brewing. The FIA, Formula 1, and Extreme E have joined forces to create the first world championship of hydrogen-powered motorsport: Extreme H, which will begin in 2025.
Why hydrogen? This green fuel offers a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. It produces no carbon emissions, only water vapor, making it an ideal choice for reducing the environmental impact of motorsport.
A group of experts, led by Mark Grain, Technical Director of Extreme E, Pat Symonds, Technical Director of F1, and Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single-Seater Director, have embarked on the challenging mission of developing hydrogen technology for motorsport. Their goal is to assess the progress in this field and determine the best applications for racing and mobility in general.
The Hydrogen Working Group will not only focus on vehicle engines. It will also explore the use of hydrogen in race venue infrastructure, transportation, charging, storage, and management. Safety will be a fundamental priority every step of the way.
This new chapter in the history of motorsport promises to be exciting. The development of hydrogen as a fuel for racing will not only drive technological innovation but also inspire new generations to dream of a more sustainable future.
