Hydrogen-Economy is still a distant dream for most countries

I am in pain since I read the news about Shell scrapping Norwegian Blue Hydrogen project on account of “lack of demand for Green/Blue Hydrogen”.

?

According to me, to increase the demand for green and blue hydrogen and boost sustainability, countries can take several strategic actions.

?

Government Policies and Incentives are the cornerstones of Hydrogen Economy.

Subsidies and Grants go a long way in building the confidence of Enterprises and general public alike. Governments must provide financial support for hydrogen production projects through subsidies, grants and tax incentives.

Another way to create favorable conditions is through driving Regulatory Frameworks. Governments must establish clear regulations and standards for Green/Blue Hydrogen production, storage and distribution to create a stable market environment.

?

Infrastructure Development is the key.

Timely investments in Hydrogen Production Facilities helps the countries steadily build the fabric to support Hydrogen Economy. Governments must enable investments in building and upgrading facilities for producing Green Hydrogen generated using renewable energy and Blue Hydrogen generated using natural gas with carbon capture and storage.

Government must encourage developing distribution networks. Develop pipelines, spreading network of Hydrogen-refueling stations and storage systems to ensure efficient hydrogen distribution infrastructure would yield desired results.

?

Public-Private Partnerships are going to be the life-line of Hydrogen Economy.

Collaboration-based initiatives would help us foster partnerships between governments, private companies and research institutions such as IIT/IISc to drive innovation, develop use-cases and scale-up hydrogen technologies.

We need bold investments in the space of Green-Hydrogen R&D. Governments must support research and development efforts to improve the efficiency and reduce the overall cost impacts of hydrogen production thereby incentivizing its utilization in more sectors in the price sensitive markets such as India.

?

We need coordinated efforts for Market Creation.

Demand-stimulation initiatives such as those taken up by Japan and South Korea would truly develop Hydrogen Economy. Encouraging use of hydrogen in various sectors such as transportation, manufacturing industry and energy generation through mandates and incentives.

Drive Public Awareness Campaigns to excite the real-end-users the Citizens. Afterall, the Hydrogen Economy is not only a subject of Industry players or Governments; the Citizens are equally important stakeholders here. Educating the citizens and even the small-scale industries about the benefits of hydrogen as a clean energy source will help us in driving acceptance and wider adoption.

International Collaboration

International cooperation would be crucial in developing internal consensus. World leaders selecting to abruptly withdraw from important initiatives such as the Paris Agreement would only do more harm to the environment and result in difficult future for our coming generations.

Global Standards: Work with international bodies to develop global standards and certifications for Green/Blue Hydrogen production and usage.

Trade Agreements linking to FTA signed between different countries: Establish trade agreements to facilitate the global exchange of hydrogen and related technologies.

?

I do believe that by implementing such measures, countries can significantly increase the demand for Green and Blue Hydrogen; contributing to a more sustainable and low-carbon future for our next generations.

Currently, hydrogen is not cost-competitive compared to traditional energy sources like fossil fuels or even renewables. How do you propose the hydrogen economy can overcome these cost barriers, and what realistic timeline do you see for achieving price parity?
