Hydrogen energy is considered as the most promising clean energy in the 21st century. More than 200 years ago, mankind became interested in the application of hydrogen energy. Since 1970s, many countries and regions in the world have made extensive research on hydrogen energy.

The research and development of hydrogen energy in China can be traced back to the early 1960s. In order to develop the national aerospace industry, China scientists have done a lot of effective work in the production of liquid hydrogen as rocket fuel and the research and development of H2/O2 fuel cells. The development of hydrogen as an energy carrier and a new energy system began in 1970s. In order to further develop hydrogen energy and promote the development of hydrogen energy utilization, hydrogen energy technology has been included in the Tenth Five-Year Plan for Science and Technology Development and the Long-term Plan for Energy Field.

Hydrogen cell technology is considered as the ultimate solution to solve the future human energy crisis by using hydrogen energy. Shanghai has always been an important base for R&D and application of hydrogen fuel cells in China. Shanghai Automobile, Shanghai Shenli, Tongji University and other enterprises and universities have also been engaged in the research and development of hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen vehicles. With the rapid development of China's economy, the automobile industry has become one of the pillar industries in China. In 2007, China became the third largest automobile producer and the second largest automobile market in the world. At the same time, the fuel consumption of automobiles has reached 80 million tons, accounting for about a quarter of China's total oil demand. With the increasing shortage of energy supply, the development of new energy vehicles is imminent. Hydrogen energy is undoubtedly the best choice for automobile fuel.
