The Hydro Baptism

The Hydro Baptism

There are on-the-job hazards that we can all tell tales of. Whether you have been in the field 3 weeks or 40 plus years, there are plenty of hidden anomalies that sneak up and remind us of the effectiveness of the gravitational pull and the pain of unwanted impact from slips, trips and falls.

After all, you are?a land surveyor, the most unappreciated and misunderstood species known to the trades.?You have given more blood sweat and tears to the insect world than any other professional who is plunged into the great outdoors. Even the famous USPS mail person has nothing on your forged endurance of the seasonal elements as you record that data regardless of the terrain and seasonal tempest.

Our common hope is that everyone stays safe and takes the necessary precautions to stay safe, so here are some simple industry tips to keep in mind while you are exercising the due diligence resulting in your immeasurable spatial mastery.

Effectively communicate your plans for surveying to the office, leave a note on your dashboard indicating your plan of attack when entering large forested areas. Communication is key in establishing an awareness between work groups or other people entering your work area. If you work around heavy equipment operation, contact the project managers and equipment operator when entering a work area and be certain your action plan is known by managers and field crews active in your area of concentrations and time frame.

Something feels a bit more dangerous than other threats when you find yourself standing chest deep in water with a data collector that costs more than your first car. Trying to stand strong against water current and navigating the mysterious bottom of a water body while recording the sub-surface shot. Tightly fit into your waders in hopes they don’t fill with water or spring a leak. You often find yourself in these situations working alone or with a partner that can do little should the unmentionable happen.

This is where I first realized the value of an RCV or USV. Sonar attached to a remote-controlled boat to help measure during the hydrographic/Bathymetric survey through targeted water bodies. Seafloor Systems Inc.’s solutions have saved this aging soul more times than not. Spending two decades in the deep of it all, thankfully the tools of our trade continually advance to keep us out of harm’s way and to bring us to a level of efficiency that can quadruple our success stories.

?

Talk with your Survey Supplier and ask about the Seafloor Solution that fit your needs today.?After all you owe it to yourself, because at the end of the day we all just want to return home knowing we can do it all over again tomorrow.?Safe and sounding.
