Hydraulic hoses and fittings for specialized vehicles

Hydraulic hoses used in construction, agriculture and mining must be strong and flexible. Hydraulic fittings must also be up to the job, but first let's look at the hose types. Of course, there are different types of hydraulic hoses, but what they have in common is this: their pressure capacity determines the way the hose is constructed.

High-pressure hoses are used in the most demanding applications, from backhoe hydraulics and hydraulic trenchers to tractor hoses and combine hydraulics. Medium-pressure hoses are also common in off-road applications, but heavy-duty work usually requires high-pressure hoses.

Anatomy of a hydraulic hose:

All hoses, whether low, medium or high pressure, are made up of the same components: the outer cover, the reinforcement and the pipe. The difference between high and low pressure hydraulic hoses really comes down to the reinforcement material. Low-pressure hoses usually have a synthetic textile braid, while medium- and high-pressure hoses usually, but not always, have a wire braid. Some are made of thermoplastics or even textiles.

Cover: Protects against abrasion, wear and tear and damage caused by its environment.

Reinforcement: Reinforces the hose structure to withstand internal and external pressures.

Tube: Plastic or rubber lining for transporting fluids

Hose type and pressure range:

It helps to break down low-pressure, medium-pressure and high-pressure hoses by looking at their working pressure range (more widely known as the working pressure range), which is measured in pounds per square inch (psi). Remember, burst pressure is a different animal. This is the point at which the hose bursts, and that number is usually four times the psi. So if you have a hose pressure of 5,000 psi, it has a burst pressure of 20,000 psi.

Spiral Hose:

High-pressure and ultra-high-pressure hoses are reinforced with spiral-shaped, high-strength steel wire wrapped around the tube in alternating even layers to balance pressure and containment forces. High-pressure hose usually has what is called "four-wire" reinforcement, while ultra-high-pressure hose usually has six-wire reinforcement. The number of layers of spiral wire is actually related to the inside diameter (ID) of the hose. If the ID is less than 1 inch, then it's likely to have four layers.

As you might expect, braided hoses made of textiles are more flexible than spiral hoses.

Hose for hydraulic system design:

Here is a range of hydraulic hoses commonly used in heavy engineering. We focus on EN and SAE standards. what does SAE stand for in hydraulic fittings and hoses? The Society of Automotive Engineers. SAE is based in the U.S. and is now known as SAE International. there are many hose standards in the world, but by far the most widely followed are those of SAE. Although not as common worldwide as SAE hoses, EN is the European standard. The standards are usually consistent with each other. For example, Deutsches Institut für Normung is the German national standardization organization, also used in Europe. So if you're in the UK and are looking for DIN or EN hose - or often DIN EN - you'll usually see the SAE standard code next to the Eurocode, letting you know it conforms to the SAE standard:.

Applicable standards: DIN EN 855 / SAE 100 R7

Also know that the standard is only voluntary. Manufacturers apply standards to provide continuity and similarity for their customers.

Types of hydraulic hoses:

The construction, agricultural and mining industries rely on these types of hoses.

High pressure hoses:
