Hydraulic Fitting Types and Applications

Hydraulic fittings come in many types and applications. They are used to connect hydraulic hoses to components such as hydraulic cylinders, pipes, tubes or different types of hydraulic hoses in a hydraulic system.

Different types of hydraulic fittings allow fluids to flow, change direction, divert or mix. These fittings should be able to form a tight seal in the application and prevent leakage. Hydraulic Fitting Type:

The following types of hydraulic fittings are widely used in European and American markets:

ORFS: ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) fittings have an O-ring groove in the flat of the fitting. The sealing of such fittings is achieved by connecting an O-ring to the flat face of the female connector. These fittings are ideal for high pressure applications and provide leak-free connections.

ORFS accessories can be of the following types:

Straight ORFS Fittings Straight thread with male ORFS connection point to male NPT, G or metric thread

Elbow ORFS Fitting Elbow screw connection, one ORFS female connection and another angled ORFS male connection

DIN/BSP: DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) and BSP (British Standard Pipe) fittings are the types of hydraulic fittings commonly used in Europe.

DIN fittings ensure interchangeability with different brands of fittings and are used in the industrial, construction, petroleum and luggage industries.

BSP fittings conform to BSP thread standards. They are used to seal and interconnect pipes and can be achieved by interlocking external (male) threads with internal (female) threads. They are mainly used in the plumbing industry and are widely accepted except in North America where NPT standards are used.

The following criteria should be considered before selecting the correct hydraulic fitting type for your application:

Size: The inner diameter and outer diameter of the fitting are two important dimensions to consider. These diameters of the fitting should be adapted to the diameter of the hose. Oversized or undersized fittings can cause leaks or connection failures.

Material: The material of hydraulic fittings should be compatible with hydraulic oil and working environment. The most commonly used joint materials are brass, aluminum, steel or stainless steel. NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) O-rings are the most widely used sealing material.

Temperature: Hydraulic fittings should be suitable for your temperature range.

Pressure: Hydraulic fittings must be suitable for your pressure range, including pressure peaks. Operation beyond this range may damage the accessory.

Application: The type of application also determines the type of accessory to use. Tee or cross fittings for mixing or dispensing applications.

Assembly: Hydraulic quick couplings can be used if the hydraulic system requires frequent connection and disconnection of hoses or tubes. Similarly, hydraulic compression fittings can be used to eliminate the need for welding or brazing of fittings. It uses a compression nut to tighten the ferrule, creating a very tight seal. It can be used in high temperature areas where solder joints may leak.
