?? Are you being fooled by the illusion of flexibility in hybrid work?

It's often called the best of both worlds.

But hybrid work disguises inflexibility as freedom, leaving teams caught in the "trapdoor effect" - where shortcuts become snares.

This week we explore how well-intentioned policies can sabotage the flexibility they aim to offer. Remote leaders lean in! ?

Despite 52% of workers partially working from home, the reality is that true flexibility is pretty rare in modern hybrid setups.

Lurking beneath its glossy exterior are trapdoors of inefficiency and rigidity that can disrupt team dynamics and cause a mass exodus of high performers. Eek!

There’s a paradox of hybrid work flexibility at play here - but with these transformative strategies you’ll learn how to turn pitfalls into power plays.

Are hybrid companies too cautious for their own good?

The transformative power of fully remote work is undeniable.

But most companies are happy with adopting a lukewarm hybrid approach – despite overwhelming evidence that suggests they’re missing out.

The equation seems off, doesn’t it?

So - leading Stanford Economist Nick Bloom is on Out of Office this week to explore the phenomenon of hybrid hesitancy.

Exactly why is the corporate world choosing to dip their toes into remote work, instead of fully immerse themselves in it? We find out. ??

Let's pick apart the data with the world’s leading WFH researcher, a LinkedIn Top Voice in Remote Work and a multi-award-winning career academic.

Nick’s been examining remote work under a microscope for two decades. It’s his insights that helped pioneer the remote work movement.

???? Ask Andrew ? Answers to Your Questions

?? Send your questions here!

This Week's Question is from Jessica Rojas in New Jersey USA:

"Hello Andrew, I am Jessica, I was born in Colombia but I have lived in New Jersey (USA) for 6 years. At work it has been a challenge for me to be able to compete for good jobs and well-paid salaries. There is too much competition and very well-prepared people. My question is: Can you give me some advice to prepare and be highly qualified to obtain a position in Crossover? or any other remote job? What skills should I acquire? Thank you so much."

My Answer:

Hey Jessica,

I don't know what field you work in, but I can give you three tips that would be universally true:

1) Subject matter expertise

Global remote positions are super competitive so you need to be at the top of your game. You need to be able to not only produce high quality work yourself, but also define the specific factors that differentiate between high and low quality work in your niche, so your expertise can coach others—and prompt AI—to deliver high quality outputs every time.

2) Autonomy

Think about the problems faced by teams/companies you want to work in, and how you would solve them. The most valuable remote employees don't need to wait for someone to tell them what to do. They're really good at making autonomous progress towards a big goal, by identifying the important problems—and then solving them (even if nobody asked).

3) AI skills

If you're not already the best in your field, this is your opportunity to leapfrog. The arrival of AI is rapidly changing every industry, and a "good" person who knows how to harness its power is already more useful than a "great" person who doesn't.

P.S. I hope traffic on the turnpike has improved since I was last in New Jersey!

The real problem is not the style of working but the leaders of these companies, all these companies have this "Old School" way of working and its dying. All these companies are ruled by old men trying to be cool.
