Hybrid Work Redefines Leadership: Key Strategies for Modern Managers

What’s your best tip for navigating hybrid work?

I recently experienced another "Welcome to Australia" moment when LinkedIn News Australia a featured me to discuss how hybrid work is reshaping the role of the manager at SXSW Sydney. It’s been amazing connecting with so many insightful folks at the event!

As hybrid work becomes more common, managing teams goes beyond hitting targets. It’s about supporting your people, staying connected, and thinking ahead. Here are three key ways to adapt:

1?? Put Growth First – Help your team build the skills they need to thrive, both professionally and personally. Prioritizing long-term development will have a lasting impact.
2?? Communicate with Care – With teams in different locations, intentional communication is essential. Regular check-ins and showing empathy can significantly boost engagement and connection.
3?? Plan for the Future – Look beyond day-to-day tasks. Identify potential leaders and provide them with opportunities to grow. It’s all about preparing your team for what’s next.

A big thank you to LinkedIn News, Marty, Brendan, and the team for this opportunity to share thoughts with such a dynamic community!

Resilience in Action: How Do You Bounce Forward from Challenges?

What’s the most recent challenge you’ve faced, and how did you overcome it? ??

Standing at the NYSE recently got me thinking about resilience—not just as a concept we throw around, but as something we actively live through. It’s easy to talk about resilience, but we know the real work lies in practicing it. The truth? It’s not just about bouncing back. It’s about bouncing forward—learning, adapting, and getting stronger with every setback.

As business leaders and innovators, we know that resilience is the foundation of growth. But it’s not just about individual strength. It’s about how we build that strength together—whether in teams, companies, or entire industries. Resilience takes collective effort, and those who master it thrive in today’s fast-changing world.

?? Here are a few insights:

???? True resilience isn’t about returning to where you were—it’s about evolving into something better.
???? Growth happens when we see obstacles as opportunities to learn and improve.
?????? Resilience is also about collaboration—how we support each other in tough times is key to long-term success.

So, I’m curious—what recent challenge have you overcome, and how did you push forward? Let’s learn from each other’s journeys and keep driving forward.

Reaching Net-Zero: Are Partnerships and Roadmaps the Keys to Success?

What do you think is the biggest hurdle to reaching net-zero—innovation, policy, or something else?

I was excited to speak and lead a session at the World Economic Forum Sustainable Development Impact Meetings 2024 in New York City once again. Two key takeaways really resonated with me:

1?? ????????????-?????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? – We’ve seen so many inspiring case studies showcasing how regional collaborations between governments and businesses are already making a difference. By sharing resources, expertise, and innovations, these partnerships are creating real solutions to tackle climate challenges. It’s like that vacuum in a clean room—when everyone pitches in, the results are transformative. The real challenge now is scaling these efforts globally.
2?? ?? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????? – Without a clear plan, efforts to reach net-zero will remain fragmented. The successful case studies we discussed showed that when both sectors come together around a detailed, actionable roadmap, progress happens much more rapidly. It’s about breaking down those big, ambitious goals into smaller, manageable steps. After all, it’s not just about having the ambition; it’s about having a clear path to follow.

The balance between innovation and regulation is also so important. How do we ensure they work together seamlessly to achieve our global goals?

What are your thoughts on the role of partnerships and roadmaps in driving sustainable change?

????I want to hear your insights and any partnerships and/or case studies you want to highlight!

A special shoutout to Chitkala Kalidas, Gunter Dr. Beitinger Emmanuel Guilhamon, Florent Andrillon, Memia Fendri, Kyle Winters, Ian Cronin, MBA, MPP, and everyone who joined us! The energy in the room was incredible, and time flew by faster than I could’ve imagined. Thank you all for sharing such powerful insights—we are stronger together!

Future Leaders on the Rise: How Young Minds are Driving Impact

I recently had the chance to speak at the UNICEF Australia Nxt Wave Future Lab during SXSW Sydney, where I got a chance to connect with over 40 young changemakers. The room was buzzing with the next generation of philanthropists and climate activists from Australia and the Pacific, all eager to make a difference.

The energy was contagious, and I loved the exchange with these bright minds who weren’t afraid to ask tough questions and challenge conventional thinking. Their passion for change and innovative approaches to climate issues left me inspired and optimistic about the future.

Here are three takeaways from my time with this inspiring group:

1?? Bold Curiosity: These young leaders don’t just ask questions—they challenge the status quo and push for meaningful action.
2?? Innovative Solutions: Their out-of-the-box thinking shows that fresh perspectives can drive impactful change.
3?? Relentless Optimism: Even in the face of challenges, their hope and commitment to a better future shine through.

A huge thank you to UNICEF Australia and the team for having me. Special shoutout to Zunilka Casmenco Whitnall, whose initiative and dedication made this happen. After connecting with me on opening day, she went above and beyond to ensure I made it to the lab. Her commitment is a true example of the passion driving the next generation of leaders.

So, what advice would you give to the next generation of changemakers?

Empowering Entrepreneurs: How to Scale Across Borders

How can we better support entrepreneurs looking to expand across borders?

This was a key theme in my recent talk and conversation with Birgitta Tazelaar, The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United States of America and Theo Peters, Dutch Consul-General in San Francisco

We explored how innovation, AI, and strong networks can help entrepreneurs—especially those from the Netherlands—scale their businesses in the U.S. As many of you know, I’ve had the privilege of spending quite a bit of time in the Netherlands and connecting with some of their top founders.

One thing that really stood out: the power of collaboration. Whether through mentorship, investment, or partnerships, having the right support system can make all the difference. And with AI continuing to transform industries, there’s even more potential for cross-border growth and innovation.

?? What’s Next? By strengthening connections and sharing knowledge, we can open new doors for entrepreneurs to succeed globally. What more can we do to help entrepreneurs enter new markets?

Special shout out to Michael Dooijes, Kaoutar Ashour, and scale NL team for having me in San Francisco! Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York ScaleNL Netherlands Consulate in San Francisco

Dockworkers' Strike: Key Lessons on Disruption and Automation

What do you think are the most important lessons we can learn from the recently resolved dockworkers' strike?

I was live on CNN Newsroom discussing the impact as 45,000 dockworkers went on strike along the East and Gulf Coast, marking one of the largest labor actions in nearly half a century. Though the strike has now come to an end, its effects continue to resonate across industries, offering valuable lessons about labor, automation, and the resilience of our supply chains. Here are three key takeaways I’ve been reflecting on:

1?? Potential Supply Disruptions: The strike caused delays for goods like food and cars at ports. While some companies were able to manage with diversified suppliers, others, particularly smaller businesses, felt the strain sooner. The situation underscored the importance of preparation and adaptability in a globalized economy.
2?? Automation vs. Jobs: The workers’ demands highlighted concerns about both wages and automation. This event sparked renewed discussion on how to balance technological progress with protecting jobs, raising the question of whether automation can be integrated in ways that create new roles for the workforce.
3?? Global Issue, Local Effects: Although the strike has ended, the disruptions it caused serve as a reminder of our economy’s interconnected nature. Essential imports, such as bananas, faced potential delays, showing how global labor issues can impact local communities and everyday life.

Essential Traits for Thriving in an AI-Driven World

What characteristic do you think is most essential for navigating the fast-evolving world of AI?

I recently hosted an engaging discussion titled “Navigating the AI-Driven Future: Innovation, Product Evolution, and the Future of Work” at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, a signature program of Claremont McKenna College, sponsored by Financial Economics Institute at CMC, featuring HP's Chief Strategy Officer, Ganesha Rasiah. It is always fun exploring how AI is reshaping our world and the ways we innovate, create, and work.

One major takeaway from our conversation was that AI is evolving rapidly, and keeping pace means we all need to embrace lifelong learning. It’s clear that we can’t just sit back and let this technology unfold—we need to be active participants in our understanding of it.

When I asked the audience to describe AI in one word, the responses were varied and lively—ranging from “scary” and “exciting” to “limitless” and “unknown.” However, Ganesha’s word—“personal”—really resonated with everyone. It reminded us that AI isn’t just about technology; it’s a journey that touches each of us in unique ways.

?? ?????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????????:

1?? ???? ???? ???????????? ????????????????: Our relationship with AI shapes our experiences. The more we engage, the better we can use it to our advantage.

2?? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???? ?? ????????: With AI changing every moment, curiosity and exploration are key to understanding its potential.

3?? ?????????????? ?????? ????????????: While there are concerns about job displacement, we must also recognize the new opportunities that AI will create through our adaptability and creativity.

4?? ???????????? ?????? ??????????????: Those developing AI need to prioritize people, ensuring that technology serves humanity responsibly.

Shout out to all the students, faculty, alumni, and community members who came. Special thanks to Heather, Nishant, Tuyet-Mai, and their teams for all the support! ????

I felt a wave of nostalgia at the Y2K International film screening during the purple carpet premiere at SXSW Sydney!

As I reflected on that time, I was transported back to the days of dial-up internet, flip phones, and the early adventures of e-commerce. Life felt simpler then, yet that era was a catalyst for the innovations that shape our world today. It’s fascinating to see how those foundational moments laid the groundwork for the technology we often take for granted now.

It’s remarkable how far we've come in just two decades. Technology has completely transformed our lives—email replaced faxes, streaming took over TV, and now we’re on the brink of AI and the metaverse changing everything again. And if you think things have moved fast already, wait—it’s only going to get crazier.

If you could bring back one thing from 20 years ago, what would it be? What do you miss most from those days? A gadget, a trend, or a different way of doing business?

Standing next to the National Basketball Association (NBA) Championship trophy at NBA HQ with Lesley Slaton Brown, SVP and?Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer of the NBA, I’m reminded of a simple truth: No one wins alone.

In business, just like in sports, diversity of thought, perspectives, and lived experiences create a stronger, more innovative, and more resilient team.

Here are three things that really hit home for me:

1?? Trust is Everything – Every championship team is built on trust. Players count on each other to deliver, and the same goes for business. When your team trusts each other’s abilities, big things happen.

2?? Diversity is a Game-Changer – The best teams don’t all look the same, and they definitely don’t think the same. In business, just like in sports, diverse perspectives create a stronger, more resilient team.

3?? Winning Takes Time – Instant success is a myth. The teams that win big are the ones that play the long game, learn from setbacks, and keep pushing forward—together.

Huge thanks to Lesley for hosting me and sparking meaningful conversation about diversity, EQUITY, inclusion and teamwork. Always a blast spending time with you! Next time, we’ll have to shoot some regulation hoops!

So, who’s on your team helping you succeed?

?? When your glasses decide to make an unexpected fashion statement on Sky News…

Ever had something surprising happen right in the middle of a big moment?

I was live talking about SXSW Sydney, and because we were outside, my glasses tinted up like I was wearing sunglasses. Accidental "cool factor," right? ?????

Moments like these remind me that no matter how much we prepare, things won’t always go as planned. But sometimes, rolling with the unexpected makes the experience even more memorable. So, the next time life throws a curveball, don’t stress—embrace it!
