Hybrid cloud vs Multi-cloud

  • Hybrid clouds will provide access to mixed private and public cloud resources, ideally controlled through a single management environment. Enterprises that use a hybrid cloud model will be able to use different clouds as needed, even moving a given workload from one cloud to another and having some solutions span multiple clouds.
  • A multi-cloud strategy employs a mix of public, private or hybrid cloud solutions, but does not necessarily use different types of clouds. A company might opt to use more than one private cloud. Or, they could connect to several public clouds, provided by more than one cloud Finally, they could mix it up by adding a hybrid cloud deployment as well.

Key Points:

  • Enterprises using a multi-cloud solution can leverage the service that is the most cost-effective, and precisely when they need it. However, cost savings is not the only advantage. An effective strategy can help to prevent vendor lock-in, support business objectives such as disaster recovery and performance optimization, and create agility for an organization.
  • Knowing how public, private, hybrid and multi-cloud deployments impact an enterprise is like knowing whether to put on extra sunscreen or to carry an umbrella.
  • According to Gartner, 70% of enterprises will be implementing a multi-cloud strategy by 2019. Some do it because they are mandated by regulators to have more than one cloud. Others are deciding they can’t put all eggs in one basket and want the flexibility to use multiple different vendors.

Conclusion:

Companies used to look at cloud as a data center and it was all about IAAS. Now it’s becoming more and more abstract: PAAS, containers as a service, micro-services, functions as a service, IoT developer kits are just the beginning. It seems that the more mature a company is in the cloud, the further up that stack they go. Where is all this going? Customers are looking for operational efficiencies, cost savings and more productivity and agility. In conclusion, there is no question customers will slowly continue to adopt these new technologies.
