Hybrid Change Managers (no it's not another PM vs CM article) ... OK so what is it then?

Just a short missive for you today ...
My view
I see the organizational aspects of a technical Change Request (CR) as an area that could co-exist with Organizational Change Management (OCM). The implementation of a technical CR into a live business environment is more than just deploying a new feature or system—it's about managing the ripple effects that the change has on people, processes, and the organization as a whole. Traditionally these roles have been kept separate but still called Change Managers thereby confusing a lot of people.

Best Practices in Change Management
This perspective aligns well with best practices in Change Management. Technical changes often have significant impacts on the business side, and failing to address these can lead to resistance, confusion, and even failure of the change initiative. By involving an OCM who focuses on the people-oriented aspects, you ensure that the change is not only technically sound but also smoothly integrated into the business, with stakeholders fully informed and prepared to adapt. This holistic approach is key to successful Change Management.
What would the Process look like?

6 个月Ron Leeman are we over complicating? If change managers manage the people impacts of change then as Karl Walter Keirstead points out technical change/change requests etc simply form part of the project/implementation plan that CMs support. OCM IS multi-disciplinary but surely we are clear on roles/responsibilities by now? Or am I missing something?
I belIeve this a non discussion. For me, an effective CM is always hybrid. That is one of the reasons why different industries, environments need different CM profiles.

6 个月Ron Leeman Thought provoking as usual. By my experience, Change requests to the product are changes to product's current configuration and specifications, and such changes need to be approved and budgeted by the product owner. These requests may be a result of a rethink or new requirements by the product owner or due to new technology. Once approved, the PM includes the change request for product delivery and amends the project product delivery schedule. Its important that the CM is kept in the loop for all product change requests to evaluate in coordination with IT/technical analysts if the technical change will impact process, people and adoption. And if thats the case, CM will need to undertake a change impact assessment with stakeholders and communicate accordingly. So PM and CM to be working closely to implement these product changes successfully.
