HV Test Services: Power Transformer Cold Commission & Testing, Oil Tan Delta and Dielectric

The Dielectric Strength of transformer oil is very important since it is essential in maintaining the reliable operation of power transformers. Over time this oil is exposed to mechanical and electrical stress as well as to chemical contamination. Many contaminants conduct electricity better than oil therefore lowering the dielectric breakdown. The dielectric strength of transformer oil is mainly determined by the presence of acids, water, and other contaminates.

When the functionality is reduced it can lead to power outages. To maintain and extend the life of the power transformer and to avoid severe breakdowns, regular testing of the transformer oil is very important.

An oil dielectric test is a measure of the electric breakdown strength of insulation oil and is performed at 75, 80 or 100kV . This test however is different to a Tan Delta oil test.

Oil Tan Delta test on oil is done to monitor the dielectric loss or insulation loss when the dielectric “ oil” is subjected to an electric field when used as insulation in a Power Transformer. The Dielectric Dissipation Factor or “tan-delta” test serves as a measure of the condition of oil.
