Hustle & heart in leadership: 3 important lessons I learned from basketball

With the NCAA basketball tournaments well underway, observing how teams respond under immense pressure to perform, to compete at the highest levels, and to win is captivating. Strong leadership and dynamic coaching are at its core. As I reflect, I’m reminded of important lessons I learned from my days on the floor, playing and coaching, that have proven invaluable throughout my career.

  1. Everyone is a leader in their own right.?In my experience, successful leaders embody hustle and heart. This means understanding your role and what success entails, committing to putting in the time and the work (and then some), persisting and persevering even when it is hard, and embodying the discipline—a grittiness factor—required to achieve BIG goals and forge new paths (hustle). They also encompass passion, sincerity, and genuine care, empowering and inspiring others to make a meaningful impact and win (heart).
  2. Be brave enough to fail (fast). Taking on big challenges, making mission-critical decisions, and ultimately leading a team through great transformation means that I have failed many times along the way. Owning and embracing each failure with courage and humility has allowed me to learn fast, gain new, important knowledge, and move forward even faster and better with each passing day.
  3. Dream.?As a girl who grew up in a small town in Iowa, playing basketball was my hard-earned ticket to see and experience the world. To engage with teammates from other countries and new cultures. To travel to new places - countries, states, and arenas. To work at exclusive basketball camps like Michael Jordan’s...and he was there! To have a “Prepare to be a Leader” endowment established in my name at my college. To have the opportunity to help an NAIA WBB program transition to DI. To dream even bigger about the leadership impact I aspired to make. Dream and go!

Leaving the world of basketball was scary. It was a big decision and an inflection point in my life. I am grateful I made the leap, and these lessons, and so many more, challenge me to be the best leader for my team—Team Propelus .

Whether you're a basketball player, an avid fan, or sitting on the sidelines, these lessons can propel your career, too.

Being in charge of TEDx events taught me all these things. Unfortunately, not too many healthcare workers are willing to be in that driver’s seat. I hustle to keep these events on track even on days when I already come home tired sometimes. I keep on dreaming big even though I have very little to work with right now. I understand many in healthcare are burning out or close to it. But, that is no excuse for not willing to lead these events.
