Hurting with eyeballs? Here’s how to increase engagement and keep your readers’ attention

Hurting with eyeballs? Here’s how to increase engagement and keep your readers’ attention

When I say that the Internet is a predominantly visual place, I'm not saying anything new. Tons of images, videos, gifs, and inevitably text are at the forefront of any attempt to increase user engagement. What irks me a bit (I’m that type of a guy) is that people constantly seem to forget one very important element that can be highly beneficial in the long run: audio.

Why is being audio-oriented important?

The exponential growth of audio in the past couple of years has resulted in a new freedom: consuming content on the go and basically developing a new way of “reading”. You have to meet your audience on their turf now. Audio has helped other publishers and content creators overcome that obstacle and reach an increasingly younger audience (that’s generally really into audio) and develop a more meaningful relationship with readers, or as I like to call them, soon-to-be-listeners.

Audio is not only an accessible alternative to reading but a completely new way to engage, grow, and ultimately monetize your audience. That’s why numerous publishers are deciding to work more on their audio content, whether it’s web-based or for smart speakers and smartphones as people grow more accustomed to interacting with voice-activated devices.

In today’s competitive and often saturated market, the creative and financial profitability audio presents is certainly something to look into, if not delve straight away neck-deep.
