THE DETAILS
????? You know what more housing brings to suburbs? More traffic. But that’s not just your classic NIMBY fighting against new housing, writes Erik Engquist. There’s a problem here that urban planners discovered long ago: Suburban development as we know it is unsustainable.?
??? From NIMBYs to YIMBYs: California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law dozens of housing bills last week. “With today’s signatures *all* of our priority bills this year have become law!” tweeted @CaYIMBY, a pro-housing org. The most significant new laws are two companion bills that remove rezoning requirements for residential development. Learn more about what’s going to reshape CA’s housing landscape.?
?? Hackers have been holding Suffolk County government data hostage since September 8, wreaking havoc for anyone looking to buy or sell property. Most sales have been put on hold… unless you’re willing to go submit records in person! *gasp*
?? Our Florida team is safe, and they’re covering the devastation to western Florida’s infrastructure in the wake of last week’s Category 4 Hurricane Ian. The storm pummeled through previously-booming real estate markets like Tampa, and more than 7.2 million homes with a combined reconstruction value of $1.6 trillion were within the impact area of the hurricane.?
?? Sorry to report that this newsletter writer has never heard of the YouTube sensation Dude Perfect, but is nevertheless tickled by the fact that three members of the comedy group are named Cody, Coby, and Cory. Anyway, the 23rd-most-subscribed-channel on YouTube might be moving its headquarters from Frisco, TX to who knows where. But it’ll be a $100 million building with a 330-foot-tall “trick shot tower,” because that’s super important to their brand, I guess??
?? After 16 years as Google’s head of real estate, David Radcliffe is getting ready to retire, and will be replaced by Scott Foster, formerly of the Royal Bank of Canada. Foster has pretty big shoes to fill — Google has offices in more than 180 cities, with a footprint of about 40 million square feet, and big plans to build everything from a new NYC HQ to $1B worth of housing in the Bay.
