The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has been one of the most devastating in recent memory, unleashing destruction and despair on an unprecedented scale. In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation, which tore through Florida in late September, the arrival of Hurricane Milton less than two weeks later has pushed communities to the brink. The back-to-back fury of these catastrophic hurricanes has left millions struggling with the loss of loved ones, shattered infrastructure, and widespread power outages.??
Hurricane Helene brought catastrophic winds and storm surges, but it was Milton that truly tested the resilience of Florida. Milton, which erupted into a Category 5 hurricane just 24 hours after forming as a tropical storm on October 6, brought winds of 180 mph and wreaked havoc across the Gulf Coast, making landfall on October 9 as a Category 3 hurricane. With an intensely small eye, Milton hit Siesta Key in Sarasota with terrifying force, pushing massive storm surges and causing extensive flooding across communities.?
The Crippling Aftermath of Hurricane Milton?
At its peak, Hurricane Milton unleashed winds so fierce that even hardened Floridians were left stunned. More than five feet of storm surge swept into coastal towns, with St. Petersburg experiencing a near-apocalyptic 1-in-1000-year rain event. In just a few hours, almost 19 inches of rain fell, inundating the area and overwhelming local infrastructure. Flooded homes, businesses, and roadways have made it difficult for first responders to reach those in need, leaving entire communities stranded.?
One of Milton's most chilling impacts was the barrage of tornadoes that followed in its wake. Florida, a state accustomed to tornado activity, experienced a surge like never before. Reports indicate that 40 tornadoes were spawned by the storm, with 126 tornado warnings issued in a single day, a record for the state. The tornadoes left six dead in Fort Pierce’s Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a retirement community of modular homes that were obliterated by the high winds. Palm Beach Gardens saw similar destruction as an EF-3 tornado tore through, leaving devastation in its path.?
Power disruptions continue to plague the state. Nearly 3 million homes and businesses were left without power. Hard-hit areas like Sarasota and Manatee counties are struggling to restore essential services, leaving residents without access to basic necessities.?
As of October 14, the human toll continues to rise, with 23 confirmed deaths across eight counties. FEMA has already issued a major disaster declaration, and the economic fallout is staggering. Preliminary estimates suggest that the damage and economic losses from Hurricane Milton could range between $160 billion and $180 billion, making it one of the costliest hurricanes in Florida’s history.?
What’s Next??
Milton’s devastation comes at the height of an already brutal hurricane season. By October 11, there had been 13 named storms, including 4 tropical storms and 9 hurricanes, 4 of which have been classified as major hurricanes. While Milton may be the latest, it is unlikely to be the last. With the Atlantic hurricane season still underway, experts warn that more storms are likely. The next named storm, potentially Hurricane Nadine, looms on the horizon, reminding everyone that the threat is far from over.?
Businesses Must Act Now?
The lesson from Hurricane Milton is undeniable: businesses and communities must prepare for the unexpected. This is no longer a matter of “if” but “when.” With hurricanes growing stronger and more frequent, businesses cannot afford to be reactive. Robust preparedness is now a non-negotiable part of operational strategy. Businesses must ensure their continuity plans are airtight, their infrastructure fortified, and their emergency protocols ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.?
For mitigating the disruption of lives and critical assets, proactive planning can mean the difference between surviving a storm and being devastated by it. The aftermath of Hurricane Milton underscores the urgent need for multi-layered crisis management and a clear focus on resilience.?
