Hurricane Ian aftermath
Following Hurricane Ian in September 2022, homeowners who filed insurance claims are experiencing a nightmare. State data shows that of the more than 700,000 insurance claims, roughly a third have been rejected or remain unpaid [1]. Residents on Sanibel Island, a small coastal community outside Fort Myers, suffered a direct hit, and a lack of insurance could prove life-altering [2]. While residents described a variety of setbacks from the hurricane, the “bulk” of the insurance denials were due to flooding [3]. This has left many homeowners without the means to rebuild and start anew. The situation highlights the need for better insurance policies that provide sufficient coverage and protect homeowners from unexpected natural disasters.
