Hunter Drives his Career Forward at Sleep Number
“I enjoy the outdoors – exploring new places keeps things fresh and clears the mind.?I was into fishing growing up and even hold a lake record for a Bowfin. My dad and I had been catching catfish all day on Lake?Tawakon, and I put one last line out and ended up having a Bowfin on it about a foot and a half long. It’s a pretty rare, pre-historic fish and you don’t catch them often, so I didn’t expect to catch one or have it?be?a lake record.?
I was working with family in construction while I was going to college and?joined Sleep Number?as a Field Services Technician?as a way to?better myself and open?myself up to possible opportunities. I wanted to see what the structure would be like with a bigger company and challenge myself.?Sleep Number gave me an opportunity as a Field Services Technician during the pandemic when it was hard to find jobs. I was so grateful to be?in a position?to support myself in a time so many struggled.?It was also very?valuable to get the initial experience in the field?I?wanted?to go into.?
When I finished my degree, I?discovered?an opportunity for an entry-level engineering role?at Sleep Number?after talking with a long-time?team member?about our career goals.?I had a lot of encouragement from my manager?and my team?as I pursued this new role.?They were very invested in helping me prepare for my interviews and constantly motivating me to reach my goals.?They believed in me and valued my time and experience here, allowing me to?take on new responsibilities.?Everyone has been inviting and shows me the ropes. People will say,?“Let’s?try this out,” or “Let’s?go look at this together,” which is?definitely helpful?for someone moving to a new city.??
My time as a?Field Services?Technician allowed me to learn the ins and outs of our product,?which has already helped me?in?my short time as?an?engineer.?I love that I get to interact with the customer through the product.?My design?and?input go directly to customers and improves their health. That’s something that drives me to work every day. I know what I’m working on will improve the health of anyone who buys the bed."??
