A Hunger to Learn

Shortly after finishing residency in 2009, I realized my education had just started.?
PharmD ?
Residency ?
Finished learning ????
Not. Even. Close.
Thankfully, I had mentors that helped me appreciate that we live at a time when you can learn just about anything you want.?
We have it easier than any other generation that has come before us to learn and grow.
In conducting over 200 interviews for the Your Financial Pharmacist Podcast, I’ve noticed a common thread. Those interviewed often demonstrate humility in knowing that no matter what credentials they carry or success they have had, there is always room to learn and grow.
They are hungry to learn.?
This is evident in the books they are reading, professional development courses they are taking, and time and money they are investing in services to grow personally and professionally.?
In the book The End of Jobs, author Taylor Pearson argues that we are rapidly moving into a time period when one’s credentials and degrees have limited value, thus requiring continuous learning and growth.
Technology advances and less expensive labor are challenging the historical role and value of many industries, including the one we belong to and love.
We live in a healthcare environment that is expecting better care at a lower cost. Pharmacists must be able to demonstrate that they can continuously learn, grow, adapt, and add value to that mission in a way that has a positive ROI.
The PharmD (and perhaps residency and/or board certification in some areas) is table stakes.
It’s expected.?
The rest is up to you.
