Hunger for Havoc

Hunger for Havoc

I've found a fascinating contradiction in my entrepreneurial journey—one that involves cherishing processes while acknowledging the sometimes unhealthy yearning for chaos. As an entrepreneur who has wholeheartedly embraced the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and its processes, I still play a daily game of tug of war between structure and spontaneity.

Embracing the Beauty of Processes

EOS, with its core principles of setting clear goals, establishing efficient processes, and nurturing accountability, has undoubtedly been a game-changer for my company, Manley Creative. The structure it provides has not only propelled growth but also instilled a sense of stability and control. I really enjoy watching my teams work harmoniously, and follow well-defined processes that enhance productivity and minimize hiccups. I also enjoy seeing this structure benefit our clients and their important initiatives.

Processes, in essence, are a safety net. They shield us from uncertainties and errors, offering a framework that guides us toward our objectives. And...they're sometimes very dull for me.

The Temptation of Chaos

Yet, within this harmony, a nagging whisper of chaos often emerges. That voice entices me to chase after the unknown, to disrupt for the sake of innovation.

But here's a (very well-known) secret: this desire for chaos, if left unchecked, can be counterproductive. Chaos can evolve into an addiction that erodes stability and dilutes the impact of our efforts.

A Delicate Balance

So, how do I celebrate the benefits of processes while tempering the urge for chaotic novelty? The answer lies in cultivating a conscious balance—a dance between the two that fosters growth without sacrificing stability.

1. Mindful Innovation: Instead of forsaking processes in the name of chaos, I've learned to innovate within the boundaries of the established systems. By introducing periodic evaluations and updates to existing processes, I can inject a dose of freshness and adaptability, nurturing innovation without destabilizing the core. After all, there's always room for improvement.

2. Strategic Spontaneity: Embracing chaos doesn't have to be synonymous with reckless abandon. I do my best to treat my moments of wild inspiration as valuable assets. By allocating specific time or resources to explore these ideas, I channel the allure of chaos into focused, strategic endeavors. On my Outlook calendar, it's listed as "Think Time" because I felt like "Jim's Wild Thoughts Time" might alarm my employees.

3. The Art of Distraction: If I feel like I need a jolt, I've discovered the beauty of strategic distraction. I create "chaos" in areas of my life that don't impact my business or family. Whether it's picking up a new hobby, learning a new skill, or delving into other creative projects, these intentional distractions provide that little charge I need. A recent example: I've been a guitar player for 40 years, so I thought this would be the perfect time to buy a drum set and learn how to play it. It's just enough of a disruption in my life to keep me from causing too much trouble.

So, here's to beautifully orchestrated chaos and tried and true structured processes living together in perfect harmony.
