No ‘Hump Day’ Wednesday here!

No ‘Hump Day’ Wednesday here!

Wooooohoooo, it’s Wednesday, it’s after lunch time! If you work Monday to Friday, you are officially over half way through the working week! Celebration! You’re on the home stretch, the weekend is in sight! Are you cheering?

Wow, why? Is that really what happens? Do people really count down the seconds, minutes, hours and days until they can clock off, till they can escape? I may not make friends here, but isn’t that all a bit scary, a bit sad even? Isn’t wishing away 5 days to live for 2 not what life’s about?

Now don’t get me wrong, in my old corporate days I remember my fair share of willing the time to pass, those awful board meetings that dragged, just wanting to get home and switch off (rarely happened as the flashing light on my blackberry was permanent), but generally those days were the minority. Yes I may have worked with some people that I wouldn’t have been friends with out of work (*disclaimer below), but generally I really enjoyed what I did. I knew I was good at what I did, I knew I could make a positive difference, I knew I could hold my own in a debate, I just knew my value and my passion for my profession.

Ok, I’ll confess, I do remember being a little bit giddier on a Friday (maybe the prospect of a cheeky glass of wine), but I don’t remember the ‘Hump Day’ term and the excitiment around it (Have you seen the memes?)!

I mean seriously what difference does it make, it’s a day … Today could be better than yesterday, it could be worse, you could make it better, you could make it worse, who knows … What I do know is that wishing the days away, living for Friday (or whenever you’re ‘released’) is no way to live.

So today I challenge YOU, I challenge you to make a conscious intention, a conscious commitment to enjoy what you do. Yes. there’ll be challenges, yes, there’ll be some level of politics, yes, you’ll work with people you don’t particularly like, but you know what? Unless you lock yourself in a box, never mix or communicate and cut yourself off from the whole world (which brings a whole host of other side effects), you’re likely to experience all of these things to a greater or lesser extent … I can almost hear the groans from some; “It’s ok, it’s ‘Hump Day’, it’s almost Friday” *rolls eyes*. Seriously, STOP living for the future, live for the now. If you’re reading this thinking “that’s me” to even one part of this, then please indulge me in this exercise:

Go to a quiet place (out of work), no distractions, turn off your phone (yes, off!), close your eyes and take some minutes to imagine yourself enjoying what you do. Picture yourself at your place of work, the environment, what you’re wearing, who’s around you, what you are doing, how you feel, the feedback you get, the difference you make’

Whilst it’s fresh, write it down. Maybe it’s where you are now, maybe it’s somewhere different, maybe you don’t know that place you saw or the people around you. So what was the difference? YOU! You were in complete control then, you were asked to “imagine yourself enjoying what you do”, so why not do that everyday? Why not start everyday with the intention that you’re going to enjoy it, it’s going to be the best day that YOU can make it … HOWEVER …

There is a big difference between “I’m bored and going through the motions” to “I hate my job, I’m unfulfilled”. So if you truly, truly are clock watching, if every day drags, if you stretch out your breaks, if you loiter at the coffee machine, if you do just enough, STOP. Stop now! Stop and go and do something different. How?

  • If you don’t like being indoors, seek a career outside.
  • If you aren’t fulfilled, look for another position.
  • If you want to travel, go travel.
  • If you want to change your direction, seek and move.
  • If you want to work for yourself, follow your passion.
  • If you want to do it … do it!

Bottom line is, let’s live doing what makes us happy TODAY! Not at 5.30pm on Friday.

From today, I’m banishing the term ‘Hump Day’ from my circle and I’m making every day a ‘yey’ day: Monyey, Tuesyey, Wednesyey, Thursyey, Friyey, Saturyey and Sunyey … after all, when you choose to see a blip as a blip and enjoy every day, isn’t life so much more fun!

Much love,

Laura x
