A Humorous Guide to Improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)

Improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) might sound like a dull task better suited for a spreadsheet-loving robot, but fear not! With a pinch of humour and a dash of creativity, we can make OEE improvement as enjoyable as a Friday pizza party.? Let's dive into some fun ways to boost OEE!

1.? Embrace the Three Pillars of OEE

Availability:

Your equipment should be available to work more than your coworker who "just needs to finish their coffee." Ensure it’s running when it should be!? That means proper planning and scheduling

Performance:

If your machines ran as fast as office gossip spreads, we’d be golden! Aim for peak performance to keep production flowing.

Quality:

Ensure that the output isn’t just “okay.” We want “wow!”—like that time you managed to bake a cake without burning it!?

The aim should always be Zero Defects

2. Regular Maintenance

Treat your machines like you’d treat your car—don’t wait until it makes a noise like a stuck pig.? Schedule regular maintenance to catch issues before they become major headaches.

Have a maintenance calendar that’s more colourful than your last vacation photos.? Make it fun!

3. Employee Training

Train your team like you’re prepping them for a game show! Everyone loves a little competition.? Offer prizes for best practices, and watch them go from "meh" to "wow!"

Remember: A well-trained employee is less likely to try and fix machinery by hitting it with a hammer!

But seriously, engagement across the business at all levels is vital!

4. Data Tracking

Use technology to track OEE like you track your favourite TV show episodes.? Keep an eye on the metrics and be sure to identify machines (and people) that are performing well.? ?

And remember, an OEE of 85% is generally considered World-Class so if you are exceeding this on a regular basis then revisit and recheck your data. You can’t have a true OEE of >100%

Celebrate small wins with your data.? If performance improves by 2%, throw a mini party — balloons optional, but above all, tell the business.

5. Create a Positive Culture

Foster a work environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas.? Think of it as a brainstorming session that’s less “corporate” and more “happy hour.”

Encourage open communication.? If someone has a suggestion, treat it like a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory!

Conclusion:

Improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness doesn’t have to be a tedious task.?

With a humorous approach, some engaging practices, and a sprinkle of creativity, you can boost productivity while keeping morale high.? So, gather your team, embrace the laughter, and watch your OEE soar!

Remember, a happy workplace is a productive workplace—now go forth and make OEE fun! ??

Great approach to improving OEE, particularly the guidance on creating a positive culture. Like any KPI, OEE is not suitable for all situations. But when strategic needs include producing more good product in less time, then improving OEE can be very powerful. And breaking OEE down into its components, availability, speed ratio, & quality rate, can identify the top production losses to address for maximum impact. Here’s a post that expands on this & provides the math behind the idea of improving OEE. https://lnkd.in/gMRvHhz5

Paul Dakin and Steve Borris - Author - Improvement Pragmatist - Retired Unfortunately #OEE is often not completely and correctly understood, as we see over and over where is talked about 'the multiplication of the factors': I have tried to explain this in the following articles; hope they can help: 1: Is OEE garbage? Bogus? a fruit salade of numbers? Here is the thing: https://lnkd.in/eJwiyUaF 2. Is OEE worthless? read about it here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/worthlessness-kpi-like-oee-arno-koch-pm8he/

Why not simply track Availability, Performance & First Time Pass (inverse of scrap + rework) separately? Combining the 3 factors produces a meaningless number that provides no information as to whether the process is in statistical control or not.
