Humiliation: Sometimes it comes with being an Entrepreneur.

So there I was, on my 40th birthday weekend saying that I would run a half-marathon, jump out of an airplane, and preach a sermon, all in that weekend!
By the way, I figured since I'm young and fit, that there was no need to practice or prepare for the half-marathon 13.1 mile run ahead of me.
So I signed up, laced up, and took off! Because that's what guys do. I never told my wife, because...I knew what her answer would be...filled with common sense, mature logic, and wisdom, but I wanted none of it! :- )
Now, remember, I'm young, fit, and healthy so I don't need to do any long complex practice routine, or meal plan...just go for it. Nike has always said...Just Do It!
Now, this all worked out juuuust fine until about mile 12, when this idea began to break down, as I would do brisk walks through the water stations, and in the process saw a curb ahead that I decided to leap onto instead of running around it.
That's when my hamstring LOCKED up, it was like someone else just took control of my left leg! The cramp set in, deep, and I figured, I've come too far now, I need to finish. So I tried to run, but it wasn't happening.
So a friend said to stretch it out quickly, drink some Gatorade instead of water this time, and get moving. So...that's what I did.
I really felt like a champ, overcoming obstacles, braving the heat, running through my painful hamstring...all until this sweet elderly lady with white hair PASSED me, and literally patted me on the butt while saying..."Just keep it movin' honey, you can do it!" (no exaggeration). I kept it moving, and finished the race, and will never forget the little angel that motivated (and humiliated) me to continue!
Being an entrepreneur is similar to running this half-marathon. It gets "hot", you're not prepared and don't even know to prepare for certain things, there is a lot of competition, and sometimes the competition just runs right past you!
I've had people try to take me to court, faced a financial crisis when investments went horribly bad, and had clients blame me for issues I couldn't control...but i'm still runnin', and much faster than I was before!
I've learned that you just have to keep running, keep learning, keep growing, and yes sometimes you may have to do something different, take a break, and come back to it. During the race that's why I would walk the drinking stations before returning to run, dude you have to take breaks. I also asked my friend for help, yes, I stopped and asked for help, men, it's OK, its really OK to do so...and it helped.
Entrepreneurs are a different breed, and our country is better because of them. So when it gets tough, and it will, remember...Just keep it movin' honey, you can do it!
