A Humbling New Year's Stroll Among the Headstones

Unlike previous New Year's days, January 1st 2024 dawned bright and clear in Seattle. My wife Anusuya and I had just returned from our annual polar bear plunge . While she wanted to relax and watch Netflix, I had another idea in mind.
"Anusuya, how about a short stroll through the local cemetery?" I suggested.?
Puzzled but trusting I had a purpose, she agreed. As we strolled past the silent graves, I could feel her curious gaze wondering what reflections this visit inspired.
Surrounded by those who had left this world before us, I couldn't help but share the reason behind my choice for the first day of the year. "Walking among these graves is deeply humbling," I mused. "Though silent, the headstones impart a quiet wisdom."
"I wanted to come for two reasons," I explained. "First, to offer humble gratitude that we've entered a new year, when so many haven't. We must thankfully cherish the time we're given."?
"Second, these graves remind us that our days are finite. We must carefully choose how to spend each precious moment."
Anusuya slipped her hand in mine, understanding dawning in her eyes. In the cemetery's tranquil setting, we resolved to live 2024 with purpose, presence and appreciation for each new sunrise we're given.?
With that, I wish you all a? 2024 overflowing with mindfulness, connection and gratitude for the gift of time. May the departed remind us all to live each moment well.?
Happy New Year! Make 2024 count.
