In today’s leadership-driven culture, we often celebrate bold visionaries, decisive CEOs, and charismatic trailblazers. But what if the real strength of leadership isn’t found in standing at the front—but in knowing when to follow?
Humble Influence is about the power of followership.?It’s about leading through service, trust, and a deep understanding that influence isn’t about control—it’s about contribution. The strongest leaders are those who first learn how to follow well, support others, and embrace humility as a cornerstone of their influence.
The Underrated Power of Followership
Followership is often misunderstood. Many see it as passive or subordinate, but in reality,?true followership requires strength, intelligence, and intentionality.?It’s the foundation upon which great leadership is built.
Consider this:
? Every great leader has, at some point, been a great follower.
? The best teams succeed because of strong, engaged followers—not just a single leader.
? Influence is most powerful when it’s earned through humility, not demanded through authority.
Humble Influence recognizes that leadership is not a solo act—it’s a relationship.
What Makes a Strong Follower?
A strong follower is not someone who blindly obeys or waits for orders. Instead, they are:
???Self-Aware?– They understand their role and how they contribute to the bigger picture.
???Committed to the Mission?– They support the vision, not out of obligation, but out of shared belief.
???Proactive and Engaged?– They take initiative, offer solutions, and challenge ideas when necessary.
???Trustworthy and Reliable?– They can be counted on to uphold the values of the organization.
???Open to Learning?– They see every experience as an opportunity for growth.
The best followers don’t just make a leader’s job easier—they make the entire organization stronger.

Why Great Leaders Are First Great Followers
Some of history’s most influential figures understood that?leadership starts with followership:
???Martin Luther King Jr.?followed the teachings of Gandhi before becoming a leader of his own movement.
???Steve Jobs?learned from his early failures and mentors before leading Apple to success.
???Military Officers?begin their careers by following orders before they ever give one.
Great leaders don’t just know how to lead—they also know how to listen, support, and serve.
How to Cultivate Humble Influence in Your Leadership Journey
Learn Before You Lead?– Absorb wisdom from mentors, observe effective leadership, and develop patience.
Serve First, Lead Second?– Leadership is about lifting others up, not pushing them down.
Stay Open to Feedback?– The best leaders continually refine themselves based on the insights of those they lead.
Celebrate Team Wins?– Recognize that success is collective, not individual.
Lead Without Needing Credit?– True influence is about impact, not recognition.
Final Thoughts: Followership is the Future of Leadership
In an age where some people wants to be a leader, few recognize the value of being a great follower. But the reality is:?the best organizations, movements, and missions succeed not because of one great leader, but because of many great followers who humbly influence the outcome.
???How has followership shaped your leadership journey??Let’s start a conversation—drop your thoughts in the comments!

1 周Jim Matuga what sticks out to me is being committed to the mission. A leader defines a mission but a follower has to buy in and do the little things to stay committed to the mission. I remember my coach in college telling us to “embrace the process†and “suffer now†in order to be a champion. I had to commit to that idea in order to be successful. It took following what he said and implementing it in my day to day to be a champion.
