Humble Beginnings
So a few weeks ago I was at Dunkin Donuts, anxiously awaiting my 'Tuna Melt on a Croissant' and I see this.
A photo.
Black & white.
In a 16:9 frame.
No gold trimming. Nothing fancy.
But with the following inscription:
" Our Humble Beginnings "
Yea..
Let it sink in.
In the photo, you'll notice a few cars parked in front of the very first Dunkin' Donuts.
What started as a small restaurant is now one of the largest coffee and baked good chains in the world - a global juggernaut.
And herein lies the point...
Often times in the past, I looked at "successful" people and "successful" businesses.
And I asked myself, "Man.. why couldn't that be MEEE?"
I later realized, after trial & error, that it COULD be me.
Problem is, I was looking at their story - a few chapters in.
I forgot to pay attention to THEIR humble beginnings, their Chapter 1.
If you can relate to that in some way, listen up.
I'll share the advice I gave myself:
1) DON'T be the author of your own sabotage.
2) DON'T think you need to be "big and fancy" from the get-go. Go for "simple" -- it'll convert to sales better anyway.
3) DON'T dismiss an idea because you're comparing your Chapter 1 to someone's Chapter 30. Dismissing your idea even before you've had a chance to validate it would be a mistake.
Look at people and businesses and be inspired. Take action. Follow-through.
STICK IT OUT.
It was only when I got this through my thick skull that my business picked up steam.
Maybe it'll work for you too.
Go Forth & Conquer,
Rosh.
