Hi Reader,

Happy International Women’s Day. Celebrating all the amazing women working in the emergency services, keeping us safe every day.

This week, I left my desk and went to a conference in Manchester. I love the buzz of catching up with people I know, meeting new people and being inspired by different thinking – I just wish there were more women at these events, in what is a very male dominated sector.

The Invisible Risk conference continues a conversation about firefighter cancer. I stared agog at John Lord as he told us about the terrible practices of 1980s firefighters responding to incidents with no breathing apparatus while wearing yellow plastic trousers.

He’s on a mission to make sure no one joins his firefighter cancer club. Read the nine-point plan below to find out how.
