For 17 years, I've observed hundreds of trainers market their way of selling as "The new way" I get it, who doesn't love new?
The problem is, I haven't seen anything new.
I've seen the same things repackaged and ripped off.
1200 versions of question-based selling. Some word for word what I've seen elsewhere.
A 25-year-old method sold as "brand spanking new". Maybe it's just me, but I think if you're going to rip off someone else's work, maybe at least shout them out, instead of saying you got the inspiration from Jesus, Socrates or Mother Theresa.
Seeing this throughout our industry caused a lot of resistance in me when I became a mentor and was responsible for training salespeople.
I don't want to package up someone else's method and claim it as my own, but at the same time, I value skill development.
It took me a long time and a lot of reflection to figure out what it is I want to teach.
I thought about what has been most impactful in my sales career... and I realized it had nothing to do with traditional sales training. (A lot of training actually made things worse)
It may sound strange, but when I really started to excel in sales was when I really stopped focusing on sales and started focusing on humans. I started to strip down what sales really was... Behind every sale is a human, you can learn sales, or you can learn humans.... I chose to learn humans. I chose to understand communication and influence, psychology and what makes us...us.
Luckily for me, I am one (a human), so I had a lot to draw from. Getting curious about why I am the way I am, what shapes my decisions, what motivates me, what am I afraid of, how are my beliefs shaped, why do I react to situations the way I do. Why do I trust certain people, and doubt others, when do I open up, when do I avoid? What causes me to procrastinate, how do I sabotage?
Developing an understanding of myself, I started to notice I had more empathy and understanding for prospects, I could see a lot more similarities, and when I found differences I would explore them. I become much more patient, I became totally fascinated with human behavior and decision-making, psychology, ego, fear, self-sabotage, bias, and childhood development.
As I made this journey, I realized the frameworks and scripts I relied on before felt rigid and limiting, so I started developing principles to navigate me without feeling restricted. There was no need for tonality training because my natural tone (curiosity, concern, enthusiasm) was shining through. I didn't need any objection-handling tactics, because I was not getting objections... I was getting humans expressing concerns, fears, doubts, misunderstandings or challenges.

This is what I came up with... Sales as a result, not an effort.
Situational and Adaptive selling with conversational leadership and empathy leading to authentic natural impactful communication. The ability to facilitate the best decision possible with another human being.
I don't have the ego to say this is THE NEW WAY. I just like it, It's my way, even if it didn't increase my performance drastically, I enjoy the conversations I have, and so does the prospect, the results are great, and the impact of understanding humans more deeply isn't limited to sales, it translates to all aspects of my life in ways that objection handling and tonality training never has.
If you are looking for a traditional sales trainer, I'm probably the worst choice out there. But if you're interested in how to have more natural conversations, understand your prospect on a deeper level, make better connections and just are as fascinated by humans as I am...
