Imagine that all brains were synchronized to produce a global mind. How would that unified mind be? Which ideas would it have? Which choices would it make? Which actions would it take? Would it be happy with things as they are? Would it change them? Would it care more about the planet than we do today? Would the world be a better place?
Now imagine the global mind was linked with your brain. You were in control. What ideas would you have? Which choices would you make? Which actions would you take? What would you keep, stop and start?
This short exercise changed something, right? In an instant, it made you think differently as you followed the suggestions and reflected on the questions. Bigger ideas, choices and actions were considered.
Widening the scope of mind expands our thinking. It also makes us more altruistic or humankind, as I like to call it. The scope of mind refers to what we are aware of and have access to mentally at any given moment. It is important, because what we focus on will direct our energy, be cultivated, and ultimately manifest in the physical and social world.
When you enter a certain scope of mind, you activate a cluster of preset attitudes and automatic reactions, like turning on and off the configuration of a system. This means you don’t have to waste energy on thinking, and can act fast and effortlessly. The chosen scope of mind will unconsciously shape your perceptions and frame your decisions.?
Identifying with a particular scope of mind can influence our thoughts to a degree where we are ready to defend, fight for, and even die for the principle, position, or property. Much suffering in the world arises from identifying with a particular scope of mind and ignoring or fighting others.
Psychologists talk a lot about mindset, by which they mean a person's self-perception and way of looking at the world. The mindset can be positive or negative, optimistic or pessimistic, fixed or growth, etc. There is not as much focus on being in a particular scope of mind, although in the moment of choice frames both the experience and the outcome.
A too narrow scope of mind limits the outlook and affects the ability to make balanced and informed decisions. A too wide scope of mind can make you miss important details and try to save the world before saving yourself. Scoping the mind comes before setting the mind.
Scoping the mind is a new exercise for many. All new is strange. To make it more applicable, I have classified the scope of mind according to size - from XS to XL - each with its own flow of energy, issue, focus and default setting.
XS — the habitual scope of?mind
The flow of energy and information is physical and chemical, associated with bodily sensations. The main issue is the survival of the physical body, and the focus is on stability, predictability, and safety. With a habitual or XS scope of mind, the default setting is more of the same.
S — the individual scope of?mind
The flow of energy and information is mental and emotional, with ongoing inner dialogue. The main issue is the success of the individual, and the focus is on opportunity, achievement, and fulfillment. With an individual or S scope of mind, the default setting is more to me.

M — the tribal scope of?mind
The flow of energy and information is social; it is about us and our shared reality. The main issues are the protection and expansion of the tribal structure and culture. The focus is on stability, reliability, and flexibility. With a tribal or M scope of mind, the default setting is more of us.
L — the global scope of?mind
The flow of energy and information is conceptual, technical and virtual. The main issues are balance, distribution, and integration. The focus is on interchange, sustainability, and co-existence. With a global or L scope of mind, the default setting is less is more.
XL — the universal scope of?mind
The flow of energy and information is metaphysical and spiritual. The main issues are peace, freedom, and oneness. The focus is on presence, awakening, and enlightenment. With a universal or XL scope of mind, the default setting is all is one - no more, to less.
The habitual, individual and tribal scopes of mind - XS, S, and M - are part of the ego mindset. It’s needed in the intense fight for survival and success in the world. However, it also keeps us locked in the outer world of achievement, with little or no energy for higher purposes and just causes.
The global and universal scope of mind - L and XL - is part of the eco mindset. It opens to the larger world and bigger picture. It allows us to access the unknown within, free ourselves from all presets, and turn each precious moment into a present for the future.
It is natural for us to act from a habitual, individual and tribal perspective. Our brains developed to secure physical survival and social success. To shift to a global or universal scope of mind is not complicated - altruism is, after all, a human trait - but to keep the larger scope in the moment of truth where choices are made is much harder. It’s neither nature nor nurture.
Too long, too many people have made too many bad decisions - and still are. Due to the simple fact that only a fraction of the earth’s population has reached a global or universal scope of mind. This may be the key to drive each person’s perception and behavior in a more life-supporting direction.
To improve inner and outer sustainability, we need to enhance our success rate in turning good will into high impact. For me, it's about improving the ideas we have, choices we make, and actions we take. Being aware of your scope of mind is a good starting point.?
Together one humankind.
