Gosh! Can you believe it's the first Thursday of May already? ??

Its madness, right?

Please join me, as I take a quick break from my comfy office chair, put the kettle on, and chat about what's been on my mind lately.

From Sci-Fi Skeptic to AI Nerd

I used to be a total sci-fi Skeptic.

The closest I got to fantasy was "Lord of the Rings!" (Loved it, by the way).

But AI is no longer science fiction.

It's now our reality, and it is very much here, in the year 2024.

From self-driving Teslas to robots serving coffee baristas at airports.

As futurist Gerd Leonhard reminds us, "Science fiction is becoming science fact!" We're living in crazy times.

Try to Keep Calm in the Hype of AI

So, how do we keep calm and carry on with all things AI?

You go offline and remember that there is a life waiting for you.

Even if you just sit in your back garden and listen to the birds.

It is easy to feel like you are getting left behind, though you are not.

As I always advocate starting with one short AI course and giving yourself time!

Madiba once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

The Importance of Ethics and Sustainability

While AI brings very exciting possibilities, it also comes with its challenges.

We need to consider ethics, governance, fairness, and the environmental impact.

Remember AI requires data centers, computing power, and resources like water and electricity etc.

Resources that are not endless.

So, if you can, I recommend reading Kate Crawford's book "Atlas of AI"?

It explores this darker side.

As she says, "AI isn't purely objective. It's a political process with choices at every level."

We need to be aware of these costs and use AI responsibly.

Be a Mindful User of AI

We all have a role in shaping AI's responsible future.

Here's how you can help:

1) Question AI bias: Consider the potential biases in AI systems you interact with. For example, if a facial recognition app struggles with people of color, raise your voice!

2) Support ethical companies: Research how companies develop and use AI. Choose those committed to ethical practices and data privacy.

3) Demand transparency: Ask questions about how AI systems work and demand transparency from companies and organizations.

Moving Forward with Purpose

The rapid pace of AI development can feel utterly overwhelming.

But by staying informed, engaged, and committed to responsible AI, we can each steer this technology toward a brighter future.

Using AI for Good: Real-World Examples

AI is already making a positive impact:

1) Wildlife conservation: AI helps track endangered species, combat poaching, and analyze wildlife populations.

2) Combating world hunger: AI optimizes crop yields, predicts food shortages, and improves supply chains to feed a growing population.

3) Climate change: AI helps optimize renewable energy systems, predict extreme weather events, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

4) Healthcare: AI assists in early disease detection, drug discovery, and personalized treatment plans.

As you can tell, I am a fan of Gerd Leonhard and he reminds us often, "The future is not something that just happens to us - it's something we create."

As a "tribe of humanity," let's work together to embrace the uncertainty and shape a future we can all look forward to.

Let us use our voices and AI powers for good!
