Humanity Still Exists, An I-10 Story
From Walton County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Will Curtis on June 11th, 2020;
“I was on my way to work this morning, driving east on I-10 near mile marker 60 when I saw debris scattered all over the westbound lanes. As it turns out, a delivery truck with granite slabs dumped their load after the metal bracing on the truck failed. Thankfully, no one was injured.
I turned around to position my car to slow any oncoming traffic and wait for Florida Highway Patrol or Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office to arrive. I got out of my patrol car and started to clear the broken stone off the highway when I looked up and saw about ten people out of their vehicles All of them had been sitting in their cars waiting to exit and decided - on their own - to help.
Within just a few minutes we had the majority of the large pieces cleared so I could reopen the road and exit ramp. While removing a piece of stone I sliced my finger open without realizing it. One of the ladies helping noticed I was bleeding and ran back to her vehicle to get baby wipes. Another person ran to her vehicle to get a first aid kit and alcohol spray to clean my hand.
At that moment, time seemed to stand still for me. Race, religion, sex, age; none of it mattered to anyone. We all saw a problem and came together to fix it. No one knew each other and it didn’t matter. Everyone help for the greater good. On top of that, two people helped me when they saw I was injured. Not because I was a deputy, but because I needed help.
This is humanity at it’s finest. Of all places to find it, it was on I-10."
