Political, social chaos, and disease has been with us for a very long time. Despite class warfare, diseases and scheming of those seeking power, humanity has shown a remarkable resilience and managed to survive thus far. Despite the stockpiles of nuclear and biological weapons, there has been no global warfare. Medical research is in a renaissance of advance. And because we are an adaptable species, as we evolve so does our ingenuity and we will survive.
The bigger question is, with the speed by which everything progresses at today, will be able to adapt in time? Perhaps not for a lot of us. But consider in the 14th century, the Black Death wiped out over a third of Europe's population. Yet Europe survived and prospered because those who did survive came together and created a better world.
Humankind has shown the remarkable ability to find meaning in negative events and to learn from even the most trying circumstances. The human values mobilized in the problem-solving process are the catalysts to innovation. Creativity isn’t simply applying the tools of science to the crisis at hand. It involves the culture of creativity, the human mindset, the “deep structures” that tell us what is important when there is the most to lose.
Scholars refer to it as “A Crucible Experience.” A crucible is by definition is a trans-formative experience through which an individual comes to a new or an altered sense of identity. It’s a trial and a test, a point of deep self-reflection that forces a person to question who they are and what matters to them. It requires a person to examine their values, question their assumptions, and hone their judgment. Invariably, a person emerges from the event to serve a bigger cause.
We tend to think of victories as life’s finest hours, but the opposite is often true. Trials and tribulations call forth faith, perseverance, prayer, and creativity in ways that victory never will. Those tools are available inside of all of us to move life forward. And although we may again have a catastrophe that has similarly devastating effects, I feel confident that after the catastrophe, humankind will survive and continue to prosper.
Why do I place this faith in humanity? Because I must. Without the belief that we will continue to grow and overcome the pains of today we might as well not have any faith at all. And that faith is deeply embedded in all of us, if we reach deep inside and all come together with simply the same belief as the sun will rise the next day.
Personally, I believe this will go down in history as one of humanity’s finest hours. Join me!
