As Humanity Continues to Cross Multiple Tipping Points in the Climate System, the Call to Reduce Carbon Footprint Gets More Desperate
Our climate crisis has been building for decades and has been publicized as the defining crisis of our time. But how many of us have been listening? While international bodies and leaders put a brave face on a dismal situation, there is no denying that time is running out. The urgency to keep global warming below the catastrophic level is becoming more dire by the day.
The hyped apocalyptic point of no return is no longer over the horizon, humanity is now dangerously in sight of this tripping point. Sea levels are rising, the Arctic is melting, coral reefs are dying, oceans are acidifying, forests are burning, natural disasters and weather extremes are becoming more frequent, food and water insecurity is growing, risks of economic disruptions, conflict, and terrorism are running high. With the worst of our predictions hurtling toward us, now is the time to act.
For companies, climate crisis will bring with it existential, financial, and business risks. Interestingly, businesses can be a powerful pawn in the battle against climate change given their strong position in society. Right from changing business models, developing sustainable products, enforcing carbon neutral practices among suppliers to encouraging changes in customer behavior, businesses through innovation a make a big impact in this all too important fight to contain climate change.
Simple ways in which companies can begin to reduce their carbon footprint include measuring and analyzing greenhouse gas emissions; reducing energy consumption; increasing the use of renewable energies; reduce waste and fighting obsolescence by future proofing, reuse, reduce and recycle; optimize employees’ transportation and promote environmentally friendly ways of working; choosing greener infrastructures and equipment; shortlisting sustainable suppliers; raise awareness among employees, clients and stakeholders; mobilizing resources for climate change initiatives; among others.
Corporates are very much a vital part of the solution to climate crisis as they are a problem. A disproportionately large number of people believe that not enough is being done by industries and their stakeholders to curb emissions. It is time for companies to start talking about solving their emission problems and do a bit more to minimize their environmental impact. Benefits of managing carbon footprint are numerous and “sustainability” is more than just a buzzword in today’s business world. That said, how many companies are actually integrating sustainability principles into their business?
What companies really think about business sustainability and how it impacts their short- and long-term value creation? What executives think about the effectiveness of their carbon footprint management programs? How educated, engaged and involved are employees in a company’s sustainability goals? How do company measure, monitor their carbon footprint and set goals for improvement? How real is the problem of greenwashing?
If you are a business leader, a stakeholder or working for a business then it is important to keep abreast of carbon footprint challenges and goals. Being socially responsible also means being sustainable. Sustainable business practices have a positive social and environmental impact and also drives profitability, making utmost business sense to trip the point of engagement where inclusion of responsible business practices are no longer just ‘nice to have’ but an essential part of a business. Although not advantageously placed in the climate crisis emergency, with the right and timely strategies this is a race we can still win.
