Humanitarian updates on Gaza, Ukraine and Cyclone Chido, OCHA’s 2024 Year in Review and more

As we step into the New Year, here are the latest top humanitarian news and stories:

OCHA’s 2024 Year in Review

2024 was catastrophic for the people we serve. Millions of lives were on the line as conflicts and unrest intensified.

At the same time, millions more people endured the devastating effects of extreme weather.

2024 was also the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers – 300 were killed.

Despite the mounting challenges, aid workers reached nearly 116 million people with assistance this year, and helped create positive and meaningful change.

Here's how

In 2025, we will continue to work to uphold humanitarian principles, and to ensure all those who need aid receive it no matter where they are.

Gaza situation update

Heavy rains and cold weather further deteriorate the survival conditions of displaced families, with tents flooded and damaged, and at least five newborns having reportedly died of hypothermia in central and southern Gaza. Water, sanitation and hygiene conditions are abysmal.

In North Gaza, the basics for survival are being decimated. Israeli forces raided and rendered Kamal Awan Hospital out of service. For 12 weeks, all of our attempts to reach besieged people who need us there resulted in denied access or obstructions to aid. The World Health Organization urges support to ensure that hospitals can become functional again.

Seizing an exceptional opportunity, our team visited one of the obliterated hospitals - watch the video ??

Ukraine humanitarian update

A wave of attacks in Ukraine left hundreds of thousands of families without electricity on Christmas. This worsened the humanitarian situation for people already struggling as temperatures plummet.

Large-scale attacks affecting energy infrastructure have resulted in extended blackouts, impacting civilians, including their access to essential health care.?

They have disrupted water and heating services, exposing vulnerable people to increased risks and the need for winter-related support, as the onset of the cold season adds a new dimension to the crisis response in the country.

Civilians and civilian infrastructure are #NotATarget.

Supporting the response to Cyclone Chido in Mozambique

Cyclone Chido has devastated communities already battling climate crises and conflict.

The number of affected people has risen since the cyclone's landfall, with figures expected to grow as assessments continue.

At least 77,000 people have received some form of assistance within 12 days of its impact.

More funding is urgently required to scale up humanitarian operations in order to meet the immediate and pressing needs of 320,000 people impacted, including 156,000 women and girls.

Your donation can provide food, shelter, medical care, water, and seeds to rebuild lives.

Every contribution helps make a difference ?? https://bit.ly/3ByB8vi

Thanking our donors for their generosity in 2024

With humanitarian needs growing faster than funding, our mission to save lives is more crucial than ever.

We thank our Programme donors for their generosity, enabling us to provide critical, timely and impactful aid to millions of vulnerable people caught in crises worldwide in 2024.

??? A special shout out from UN Relief Chief goes to Germany for being the largest donor in 2024 to UNCERF, the UN’s Emergency Relief Fund, and to the UN’s Country-Based Pooled Funds.

I did not see any mention to Sudan crisis although it was one of the worst humanitarian crises in 2024 with over 12 million people, have been displaced from their homes, with 2.5 million refugees in neighboring countries, more than 30,000 civilians been killed, 17 million children out of schools, nearly 25 million people will face famine, nearly 70% of Sudanese people in lack of basic living condition either water, food, shelter or health, let's speak the truth and stop been Baise, it is not only about Ukraine and Gaza because of the political interest of some western countries it is about HAMANITARIAN,

My deepest condolences for the departure of the 300 men and women, true angels on Earth. For the legacy and dedication they left us, may we be able to make objective decisions by 2025 that will truly lead us to reach better levels of consciousness. If we do not reach higher levels of consciousness as a Civilization, we will only remain in the same old same old. This is a fact, a settled point. For all this and much more, it is essential that Education becomes what it came to be: a North. Which naturally does not happen. It is imperative that a new Education be implemented, an Education that teaches about the Self, an Objective Education, where the Being is inserted in the learning of the Self. Only after this work is carried out with children and young adults will we see a different Humanity. Therefore, there is much work to be done. For us, for the 300 and for the children and young adults, those who will soon take care of the Planet.

**It’s time to act.** Over 100 individuals have been held in darkness since October 7, 2023. Their voices have been silenced, but we will not remain silent. We will continue to demand their freedom and safe return home. To those still standing by in silence, what are you waiting for? Now is the time to raise our voices together. #FreeTheHostages #NeverSilent #StandForJustice #HumanRights
