Humanitarian developments in Myanmar

3 years post-coup

In 2023, two key developments increased the scope and severity of humanitarian needs: natural hazards, notably Cyclone Mocha in May and monsoon rains in June–November; and significant conflict escalation following increased armed resistance from October 2023.?Continued or increased fighting, along with climate and natural hazards, are expected to increase humanitarian needs in 2024.


Floods in the Philippines

As at 16 February, more than 1.7 million people have been affected. The monsoon conditions, expected to continue till May, have resulted in livelihood losses, education gaps, and an increased likelihood of waterborne disease transmission.


Wildfires in Colombia

As at 26 January, the fires had ravaged approximately 17,000 hectares, with no information available on the number of people injured.?Aggravated by the warm, dry conditions associated with El Ni?o, these fires are triggering air quality alerts and wildlife displacement, with impacts on health and livelihoods.
