Human of Tower Hamlets: Pianka

Human of Tower Hamlets: Pianka

“I’m really lucky to be surrounded by art every day… I work at a local art gallery, and I’m also a body-based artist. I did ballet for many years and performing art helps me to explore my experiences and identity. Have you heard of Marina Abramovi?? Her type of work is kind of rare. She’s a big inspiration for me and I try to work on my ideas whenever I can.

I think art is about how it makes you feel. It’s not about having this set understanding of it; because, what you take away from a piece might be different to me. I think that’s what I enjoy most about my work — art is everyone’s.

When I moved to East London, I felt like I’d found my community. I’m originally from Estonia, and back home, being queer didn’t feel as accepted. I didn’t connect with many people like me. I feel safe and much more connected here.

I notice people’s kindness —like when an older person gets on the bus, and someone offers them their seat. Or two strangers meet at a bus stop, start a conversation and help each other out. For me, that’s what community is.

When I first got here, I was in Brick Lane a lot. There’s something about the pop-ups and the vintage vibe that makes it fun. Plus, it’s a great place for contemporary art, and the queer nightlife scene is growing. I work in Whitechapel, so I still pop into Brick Lane, but I recently moved a bit further out to Canning Town. It’s not the same vibe, but hey, the rent’s cheaper!"
