The Human Side of Conservation: Why Communities Are Key to Protecting Africa’s Wildlife

At the very heart of preserving Africa’s natural beauty which we all love so dearly, lies an essential element: the local communities. These communities are not just inhabitants; they are the stewards of the land, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding Africa's?wildlife.

The Power of Community-Led?Conservation

Across the African continent, local communities are stepping up as guardians of their natural heritage. In Kenya, for instance, over 230 community-run conservancies now cover 16% of the country, leading to remarkable recoveries in wildlife populations and providing economic benefits to local people. Species such as elephants, giraffes, and lions have seen notable population increases in these?areas.

These conservancies blend traditional ways of life with modern conservation, proving that communities and wildlife can thrive together. By managing their lands for both livestock and wildlife, communities create a balanced coexistence that benefits all. This approach not only preserves biodiversity but also generates income through tourism and sustainable resource?use.

Spotlight on Our?Partners

At Bonamy, we're proud to collaborate with several community-driven conservation projects that exemplify this harmonious relationship between people and?nature.?

These initiatives not only protect wildlife, but also create jobs, support education, and improve livelihoods - ensuring that conservation benefits local communities as much as it does the land?itself.

Here are just a few of the incredible organisations we work with?regularly:

Natural Selection?Foundation

Natural Selection Travel Foundation puts communities at the centre of conservation. In Namibia’s Sesfontein region, they’ve helped establish a community-owned lodge, creating sustainable jobs for the Himba and Herero people. In Botswana, their work supports community-led wildlife protection, ensuring tourism directly funds education, healthcare, and anti-poaching?initiatives.

Great Plains?Foundation

GREAT PLAINS CONSERVATION FOUNDATION turns conservation into empowerment. Their Solar Mamas programme trains women in remote villages as solar engineers, providing clean energy and financial independence. Meanwhile, their Conservation Education Program offers scholarships and hands-on environmental training, shaping the next generation of?conservationists.

Ker & Downey?Botswana

Ker & Downey Botswana is deeply committed to conservation and community development, ensuring that tourism directly benefits local people. Their support for the Bana Ba Letsatsi Centre provides education, meals, and care for at-risk children, ensuring they have opportunities for a brighter future. Meanwhile, their wildlife clubs, run by expert guides, instil a love for nature in local students, fostering a new generation of?conservationists.

Imvelo Safari?Lodges

Imvelo Safari Lodges is proof that conservation works best when local communities are part of the solution. Their work extends beyond safari experiences - building schools, providing clean water, and supporting healthcare initiatives for remote villages in Zimbabwe. One of their most impactful projects, the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative, involves local communities in protecting endangered species, fostering a shared responsibility for wildlife?preservation.

This list is really just the beginning. Every single lodge and organisation we partner with are doing meaningful, life-changing?work.

Turning Waste into Opportunity:?Ele-Collection

Our partners at Ele-Collection Enterprises are tackling the huge problem of plastic pollution in Southern Africa in a way that benefits both people and?nature.?

Through sustainable recycling programmes, Ele-Collection creates jobs - particularly for women - empowering them to collect and repurpose plastic waste. This not only actively restores the environment, but also provides a vital source of income, strengthening community?resilience.

Every trip booked through Bonamy helps support this initiative, with a portion of each journey contributing directly to their incredible work. We’ve also introduced an optional Plastic Pledge - a $20 contribution per traveller that funds the removal of 50kg of plastic from the environment. This waste is then repurposed into building materials, reducing pollution while providing a sustainable?income.
