Human Search For Meaning

Human Search For Meaning

The search for meaning is an eternal human pursuit. We are always looking for it. As people age they begin to examine, re-examine their lives even more and often reflect upon their journey with a sense of wonder.

Some people are happier than others in their trajectory of life lived thus far but almost all are greatly more concerned about the future course of their life---the remaining one.

How to make that count the most?

Victor Frankl's groundbreaking work " Man's Search for Meaning" stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unfathomable adversity. Frankl,a Holocaust survivor offered profound insights into the quest for meaning through his experiences and observations--- that even in the most unimaginable suffering, humans can find meaning. Amidst the brutality and despair, Frankl observed that those who survived often clung to a sense of purpose, whether it was a vision of reuniting with loved ones, a commitment to a cause, or a belief in the future.

Frankl called the notion of "ultimate freedom" ---that very last of human freedom----the power of choosing one's attitude and finding meaning, regardless of the external environment. His enduring legacy lies in empowering individuals to navigate life's complexities by embracing the search for meaning as an inherent and transformative pursuit even under most difficult of life's circumstances.

An ordinary human being is not going to experience such difficult circumstances but she/he still has to try and find meaning in their daily

So, What are the five things we could do to find meaning in our lives

  1. Contribute to a cause that resonates with you---And not just money. Preferably trough your time, talent and resources. Your network of friends, colleagues and relatives also could open up different possibilities. Volunteer/ take up a part time/full time role. Whatever works best.
  2. Find a few people in your immediate environment and work out out a plan to make their lot better and then execute that plan. Measure progress periodically.
  3. Give something that's dear to you to someone who needs it more. Many possibilities here. Think yourself
  4. Find dedicated time to listen to someone younger who seems to be struggling with some life issues/ challenges. Then help that person through some actionable insights to navigate the situation. You don't necessarily have to solve his/her problem but your help could make a big difference.
  5. Be a companion to some elderly people who are lonely. At some regular frequency visit them and be their companion---just listening ( even if oft repeated stories), helping them with some health appointments or any important regular issues will go a long way in making their lives better.

I have listed five very simple suggestions and I am sure you can add many others of your own creative ways to find meaning in everyday living.

Nothing profound. Just simple ways of making our own lives better.

One little step at a time.

Do share your stories---no matter how small or insignificant you may think them.
