Human resource management is a nuanced iteration of personnel management, treating employees as valuable assets utilized and sustained for the organization's benefit.

Key Functions of HRM:

1. Planning: This involves defining the company's business environment, vision, mission, goals, and strategy while considering future HR needs.

2. Staffing: The recruitment of candidates with the necessary qualifications, education, skills, and experience to fill organizational vacancies.

3. Developing: Identifying the training needs of employees is crucial to ensuring they possess the requisite knowledge and skills for effective and efficient job performance.

4. Managing Change: HR plays a crucial role in facilitating positive acceptance of organizational changes among employees by effectively communicating the importance of proposed changes.

5. Ensuring Health and Safety: Monitoring and maintaining employee health and safety at work reduce turnover and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

6. Maintaining Relationships: HRM fosters employee participation in management to sustain healthy relationships between employees and management, including assistance in negotiations and collective bargaining.

7. Evaluating: HRM designs processes to define, evaluate, and implement elements of human resource practices and systems that contribute value to the company.

Objectives of Human Resource Management:

The steps involved in HRM, which are:

  • Employee training: This is the process of providing employees with the skills and knowledge they need to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Employee retention: This is the process of keeping employees engaged and motivated so that they stay with the company for a long time.
  • Employee rewarding: This is the process of recognizing and rewarding employees for their good performance.
  • Business value: This is the ultimate goal of HRM, which is to improve the performance of the business by investing in its employees.


The objectives of human resource management (HRM). It is a four-level concentric circle model, with each level representing a different set of objectives.

The innermost level is personal objectives. These are the objectives that individual employees have for their careers and work lives. They may include things like job security, promotion, professional development, and work-life balance.

The next level is functional objectives. These are the objectives that HR departments have for their own operations. They may include things like recruiting and retaining qualified employees, providing training and development opportunities, and maintaining a positive work environment.

The third level is organizational objectives. These are the overall goals of the organization that HR helps to achieve. They may include things like increasing productivity, profitability, and market share.

The outermost level is societal objectives. These are the objectives that HR departments have for their impact on society. They may include things like promoting diversity and inclusion, and being a responsible corporate citizen.

The model shows that the different levels of objectives are interconnected. For example, HR departments can achieve their functional objectives by helping employees to achieve their personal objectives. And, by achieving their functional and organizational objectives, HR departments can help organizations to achieve their societal objectives.
