Ever wondered what HR takes into consideration to fill job roles? We'll let you in on the secret so you can land your dream job.
In today's edition, meet our young and talented HRBP, Huirong Niu, who will give you an insider view on how HRBPs in tech play that crucial role in helping today's professionals put our best foot forward.
1) Give a short personal description of yourself?
Hello readers, I am Huirong Niu, based in Beijing, China. I like to introduce myself as an earnest HR while I also like to add that I am a mother of two wonderful boys and wife to a supportive husband! Why should I leave it out of my description? They all require my attention 24/7.
I am quite a methodical person; I like to keep my life organised and try to abide by the schedule I make for myself to do my day-to-day chores.
Other than this, I have an adventurous side too! I like to take my children climbing, reading, and exploring museums and parks in my spare time.
2) What did you dream of becoming as a child?
Believe it or not, I grew up wanting to be a snack shop owner! When I was young, I was fascinated by the snack shop owners. I used to believe that they were the luckiest in the world as they had unlimited access to snacks and could eat anything they wanted anytime! Very pure ambition, don't you think?
3) What is one quality that makes you a people person?
There is a very famous Chinese proverb that goes around like " A smile will gain you ten more years of life." ("笑一笑,十年少").
I strongly believe in this proverb and hence always try to adopt it in my life.
I believe that having a very optimistic approach helps an individual to ensure his mental well-being and always helps him, or her create a positive environment for people around them.
In my opinion, being empathetic and partaking in the habit of sharing is one of the most influencing qualities that contribute to making me a people person!
4) What attracted you to HR as a profession?
I believe forming a connection with people at different levels comes easily for me. I can bond with people at different levels in various industries.
What attracted me the most about HR as a profession was the fact that it presents the opportunity to get connected with people from various backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences. It enables you to learn from their experiences and try to implement their life lessons in your life to become a better version of yourself!
The feeling you get after you help someone by recruiting them to the profiles that are right for them and watching them grow while loving what they do is indescribable.
The satisfaction makes you feel so fulfilled. It feels like you have achieved a milestone every time they enjoy their job.

5) A mistake you are grateful for?
Many years back, an interview opportunity to become a civil servant arose. I was sure I would be able to crack it and make it, but somehow, I got a little careless in the latter stages of the interview and ended up missing the job opportunity for which I had worked hard.
I was heartbroken, and it was a frustrating time for me to cope with the disappointment and failure, but with time, I gradually realised that mistakes and failures play a crucial part in our lives.
We must face failure with the right attitude because we need to recognise that if we don't make mistakes, we won't be able to appreciate the achievements in our lives. We should summarise and review our deeds to ensure we will not make similar mistakes next time. Be modest and cautious because, sometimes, failure can also benefit you.
6) From the HR's perspective, what's the most crucial element as a professional that one should have to survive the modern workplace?
I have observed the change in the definition of the workplace. There isn't anything known as the right candidate for any job profile; it's the quality to adapt quickly to changing situations that is one of the most crucial weapons one can possess to survive the changing dynamics.
The qualities like a positive attitude towards coworkers and challenges, good execution ability, guts to take ownership of your failures, and the go-getter energy that brings innovation to the table help us, as human resource recruiters, place the candidate in the correct position.
7) How diversity, in your opinion, paves the way to multiple solutions for a particular problem?
Pat Wadors once said, “When we listen and celebrate what is both common and different, we become wiser, more inclusive, and better as an organization.” I strongly believe in that.
An open, diversified and inclusive work culture allows people working in the same team to have an individual voice.
The more diversified a team is, the better it can tackle the challenge. We get to hear different opinions, which, when compiled, ensures that all the elements and perspectives for a particular thing are covered. It lets us know more about the current situation and helps organizations to develop better problem-solving situations. It always paved the way for creativity and innovation and helped businesses gain a competitive advantage.
8) How do you feel the importance of women in HR has changed over the period?
Human Resource has always been the profession that has been dominated by females Over the years, having more female representation in higher management positions has proved to be beneficial for the vision of achieving gender equality and addressing the concerns that females have been facing over the years in the working culture.
Hence, we can conclude that more women's representation in higher management positions indicates that we are paving the way to an equal working culture.
9) How do you feel the definition of the workplace has changed over the years?
I have seen a drastic change in how people look at the workplace. Initially, it was just the place where people would come and work. Their focus was more on the growth of an organisation. Today, it is not just confined to a place where people go to work; instead, it is where a person grows professionally and as an individual. For example, ADVANCE.AI is more focused on establishing an environment enabling individuals to develop themselves outside of work responsibilities. The hybrid working culture has also presented itself as a golden opportunity to help us spend time with our families and explore our hobbies while climbing the corporate ladder! The overall development of an individual is our main focus at ADVANCE.AI. Hence, this is why we, as HRBPs, keep conducting activities that can help bring our employees closer while they grow both professionally and personally!
